That's the difference between American style marching show bands and British military marching bands. American bands would be ripping through it as fast as they can, and you'd lose the percussion under the volume of the instruments. This is at a standard march tempo, comfortable, crisp, and balanced. I do get a kick out of watching the royal marines play the second most American march ever, though

...also the instrumentation. A lot more snares, tubas, tenor horns, baritone horns, French horns, no sousaphones, no bell-forward horns, the sound is projected differently too. The whole band is constructed completely different than what Americans typically do, and it's played in a different style

Not sure what Jerusalem has to do with any of this, unless....unless you meant something else (having misunderstood my comment). Too funny🤣

The "trio" section (so labeled in some scores), which begins with a very low note and slowed tempo, suggests to me that the composer was conveying the menacing strength of an imperial power. The melody soon brightens up. The Royal Marines do this very well and I like the drummers' moves. I'd say, though, that the US Marines play it better. Anyway, the Brits do like American marches. The only time I watched the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace (1987), I realized that the guards marching in from St. James' Palace were playing Sousa's Liberty Bell March, already well known as the Monty Python theme!.

Sorry, but the National Emblem was written for a marching brass band. As much as I love the pipes, this march needs those Sousaphones/tubas and their deep bass tones. The pipes can't duplicate those sounds. As a US Marine, this was one of my favorite songs to march along with. Having said this, the RM and other British military bands play a lot of British and other foreign composers works that are great too. At risk of being called a traitor, I also think the RM Bands are the best military marching bands in the world, bar none. Seen them live here in the States (and Canada) about ten times over my life.

I can't understand why some drummers (like the bass drum) march with an animal skin draped across their shoulders.
@Autofleet44295 күн бұрын
Traditionally the bass drummer of Royal Marine Band Service wears an animal skin pelt while on parade, this tradition goes back to the 18th century when drummers who joined from other countries wore animal skins to protect the uniform from wearing out because of the large bulky drums. Skins worn by Bass Drummers in the Royal Marines Band Service are taken from animals that have died of natural causes and are never the product of hunting. Most, if not all, are now synthetic fakes. The ones that aren’t will be replaced with synthetic ones when they become too worn out.
