National Geographic: Treasure! (1976)

Hurricane winds struck the Florida Keys in 1622, sinking the treasure-laden Spanish galleon Neustra Senora de Atocha. Three-and-a-half centuries later, a former diveshop owner brings her millions of dollars in treasures to the surface, piece by precious piece.
The story of Mel Fisher's quest for the Atocha and her lucrative cargo - estimated at $100 million - is the subject of Treasure!
"Once you see the ocean bottom carpted with gold chains, you'll never forget it," Fisher says of the experience. Fisher's team searched for years without a find. Then, in May of 1973, divers glimpsed their first real treasure. Thousands of silver coins were uncovered in a spot aptly named the Bank of Spain. After the discovery of the coins, Fisher and his crew continuied to unearth the treasure, including gold coins, a rosary, a gold disc, and finally, some silver bars whose registry numbers provied that Mel Fisher had indeed discovered the remnants of the Atocha.

In March of 1983 I stepped into Treasure Salvors museum at 200 Greene St. in Key West. Playing in a small theater in the museum I watched this same movie. I was awestruck. I joined the team a few months later as a diver. Now, almost 40 years later I still am a diver for them. I can't say enough good things about Mel and his family. Thank you Mel, your family, investors and all of the crew I have had the privilege to work with over the years. It has been great.

Loved finding this again, while looking up info for a story on a chance meeting & dinner invite with Mel, Deo & family on a 1978 trip to Key West. Deo & her daughter-in-law taught me to how to teach my 3 month old infant how to swim. I would have been paralyzed with being star struck if they hadn't been such kind, down to earth people. Unforgettable!!!

Alexander Scourby (who narrates this classic film), Richard Kiley, and Leslie Nielsen were the three best National Geographic narrators ever in my opinion hands down. You couldn't pick three amazing people to do voice over narrating when it came to classic National Geographic films.
