Fantastic naval aviation museum to visit. I was the 9 yr old New York kid watching planes come in & out of Mitchel Field Long island, NY. Now at 68 I still frequent aviation museums where ever one is in my path of travels. To the officers & men and volunteers at Pensacola Naval air Station you will be in my memories till I die. In 2001 being a FDNY Lieutenant I needed to sooth myself, following all the funerals attended following 911 by going to NAS Pensacola. I had shown my IDs due to security at the time, I was touring the exhibits when I was paged to reception desk. To my amazement a senior officer greeted me and allowed me the keys to the museum in giving me a 'cooks' tour of the museum and base. I was invited to the Officers club etc. The hospitality was beyond belief. I discovered I was the first member of any 911 Emergency Service to step ground within the museum. My sincere thank you to all present and past naval personnel for your hospitality.

I just can't imagine how my friend went there and found it boring... So many planes, so many battles, so many lives...

How could he find it boring? Every summer I go there and they have something new. I spend hours in there starting from the morning until the afternoon. And then if I have time I go to the lighthouse next door which is also a cool spot.

I haven't been there, but would like to go. My dad was there, and used to fly many of those planes, he was a WW2 navy fighter pilot, and caused the demise of 9 Japanese planes. Later he was a test pilot for many years, chiefly with McDonnell Douglas, test flying the marvelous F4H Phantom II. About the excellent Grumman F6F Hellcat, which he flew in the war, he simply said " Damn fine plane!" And it brought him home, or I wouldn't be here.

I see that you like f-14's. Great. At 14:19 you are looking at another jet the A-7. Barely noticed by you, hanging from the ceiling is an OV-10, Air frame number 155472, part of the illustrious squadron called VAL-4 (the Black Pony's). This squadron was responsible for more victorious air sorties than all other Navy aircraft and, of all things never flew off of an aircraft carrier. I as an Aviation Ordnance man actually worked on that very aircraft. I'm very proud of 155472 and wish I could see and par her side and say hello.

Really wish I could make it there, looks like you could spend ALL day there.....now all the planes there, like the Blue Angels for example, those all used to be flown back in in the day right, then they retired them and donated them to the museum, right?????
@Techiastronamo10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, all planes and vehicles you see there were restored vehicles that were donated. I luckily live 13 miles from the museum, so I can check one day when I go. It's really cool, and you should go there! It has so many historical aircraft, like P80s, Mig-15s, Demons, Nixon's Marine One Helicopter, the canopy of a ghost-airship, and such. It even has a to-scale recreated Lunar lander.
