National NC98 Receiver purchased at Goodwill Resale store for
6 dollars can it be fixed will it work ? I saw it in another customers grocery cart and talked to the man about getting it working I thought he may be an Amateur radio operator like me or into
electronics as a hobby ? he said he had no idea what it was or what it did . I told him what it was what would most likely be required to restore it to working condition how it worked and what would be needed to get it working plus an external antenna and speaker . He said to me "you kow quite a bit about this thing do you want to buy it ?" I said yes I Sure would enjoy doing all that ! and he said ok take my cart and YOU buy it . If you happen to be this man reading this on you tube I wish to say to you THANK YOU ! I have really enjoyed working on this radio during the last week for many happy hours ...the NC98 was marked 12 dollars and it was a special half price day at Goodwill so I got it for 6 dollars .Of course I have spent a lot more money on replacement parts . In Michigan we are in the winter season here in February and I enjoyed working on this old radio for the last week staying inside while we accumulated over a foot of snow outside with very cold temperatures. We live 35 miles east of Lake michigan and the huge lake Michigan
seldom freezes over evaporating lots of moisture into the atmosphere creating what we call "lake Effect snow " which due to the prevailing westerly winds falls on our area to the east of the lake so we usually get lots of snow . I find it fascinating that the snow is composed of billions upon billions of individual snow flakes and each one is different from all the others . Nice to stay inside keeping warm and watching the snow fall with a fun project to work on . There is a tag glued on the bottom of this old radio that is torn with a partial date printed on it 194 ? something I take that to be 1948 or1949 ?

Great video, good job. I have a NC-88 I recently recapped and aligned, having issues with low volume and a distinct hum that increase with volume. Any suggestions?

I eliminated the BFO coupling cap and rather than connecting directly to pin 1 of the IF I made a 3 turn gimmick around the wire. It measured 10 Pf, very close to coupling cap and I got higher and cleaner BFO this way.

Robert, I found the correct tubes and performed the alignment. It's been a few days, and I just did the BFO injection mod. I had the same good results. I can now leave the Sensitivity control all the way up on CW and SSB and strong AM stations. However, now I have to tune the AM and SW bands in the MVC position. Otherwise, I run right over the weak stations. I've been listening to the CQ WW CW Contest, and except for the selectivity, the CW sounds great! I'll try to get a video shortly of ARRL Code Practice or something similar and post it here, 73 Paul AA1SU

Can I send you my NC-98 to have it all tuned up?

Robert - I just recapped my National NC-98. Tonight, I tested the tubes, and also found two to be incorrect (like yours). One is an okay substitute, according to the cross-reference charts. The other, I had here. I'm getting ready to do an alignment, so I watched your video for a second time. I'm probably going to do the CW mod with the brown wire. I don't like the way it sounds on CW either. Plus, I have to turn down the sensitivity on strong local MW stations. Do you think the mod will help that, too? Let me know if you make a follow up video. I will probably make one when I'm done. 73 Paul AA1SU

I tried the rewire BFO injection modification. The coupling cap was 3pf. I changed it to 10pf. The BFO performance was indeed much better with the mod. Two not-so-good things: 1: the signal strength meter no longer worked on AVC. 2: Sensitivity was noticeably weaker on non-CW. Did I do something wrong? I put it back to original.

Joseph, I just did the mod and also noticed the weak sensitivity in AVC. However, if I place the knob in MVC, it cures the problem. Otherwise, I just run over the weak stations. Also, I don't have to turn the Sensitivity control down for very strong MW stations. The distortion is gone. My S-Meter still works on AVC. 73 Paul AA1SU
