Having been born in the early 1940's and living with the London to Glasgow line almost at the end of our garden. I saw the Flying Scotsman many times but in them days it was nothing special just one amongst a multitude of Engines. In those days we were more taken with the first diesels. Little did we know, what was coming.

to be honest I work in the Railway Museum train world in Belgium Brussels and I feel that we could do something similar to curator with a camera with our collection pieces. we definitely don't have as much as the National Railway Museum ( I know they go by The Railway Museum but I'm still gonna use the NRM) But we got some quite interesting steam locomotives in our collection alongside some very beautiful looking diesel locomotives as well as some electrics. it's definitely worth thinking about something like this. also I have been to the Railway Museum in York and I must admit compared to train world it is the superior museum in terms of content but I think trainworld is a lot more interactive since people can actually touch the controls of the steam locomotives and these will locomotives ( a certain number of them at least). but still I gotta give it to the NRM they are still the Kings of railway museums.

I’m fine with Mallard remaining at the NRM for the rest of time, but doing another Great Gathering in the great hall for its centenary. What Locos do you plan to return to the National Railway Museum after the renovations? Would the S56, Battery Loco, GJR luggage Coach, Hardwicke, the T26 and Winston Churchill be good candidates?

What current Locomotives, MUs or other rolling stock do you think will be the most popular in museums of the future?

You guys do such a good job with these. Re: Rocket. I completely understand what you are saying about removing the embellishments from the artifact and good on that curator a century ago for removing them. But have you considered building a new rocket using period techniques and materials? Long project, I'm sure, but I bet there are enough blacksmithing, etc, enthusiasts around to make a go of it. Because then you could have a running version. I guess you'd need to fit that TPWS stuff and a radio for mainline use, but ...

I agree with both of you about the gap in our collection of 19th century locomotives. Yes, there's 'Cornwall', but so extensively rebuilt it hardly reflects the period. And there's 'Columbine', maybe the nearest to 'Jenny Lind' in the UK. In other countries they have more of the sort of thing you had in mind, like Great Southern & Western Railway No. 36 at Kent station in Cork. In France, Portugal and Sweden more of locos of about the era you mentioned. The irony is that some of them were built by British builders. Even so the 1850s seems a blank as most of these early survivors date from the late 1840s or early 1860s.

Big boy is the most famous engine? No friggin way, big boy was a class of engine of which 25 were built so it CANNOT claim that accolade of "The world's most famous engine" which ,quite rightly belongs to the Flying Scotsman.
@james.black981 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely agreed. Big boy is a drop in the ocean compared to FS. Big boy hasn't traveled to any other country, hadn't operated for like 50-60 years and the most famous thing it has going for it is its size and power. Scotsman has visited USA, Canada and Australia, circumnavigated the globe, and holds multiple records. From its visit to Australia in 1988/89, it visited every mainland state and territory. Most people down here wouldn't know what Big boy is, but they would remember Scotsman alright. FS is definitely more famous than BigBoy

I was interested to know why engines like big bertha and the 7Fs had canted cylinders? Most other freight engines had the cylinders more or less in line with the motion. Why did these engines have their cylinders at such an angle to the motion? I've always wondered about this since I was a kid and never got a clear answer. Please, Can you fine gentlemen answer this?, after your beer of course!
@steveparrish11126 ай бұрын
Big Bertha and the 7f 'crabs' and later the BR 9fs had very large outside cylinders - larger than average. The consensus seems to be that they were steeply canted to keep them from fouling Station platforms and other structures potentially close to the track (tunnel walls, etc).😊

The Big Boys are famous for being the biggest and most successful engines in the world but engines is the word for not one is a standout from any of the others. Flying Scotsman on the other hand is the most famous A3 in the world because she was the first to reach an authenticated 100mph and Mallard is the most famous A4 in the world because of her world speed record. City of Truro is only claimed to have reached 102.3mph for there's no concrete evidence of her feat. Charles Rous Martin counting the mile posts as they flashed past is just not good enough.
