The National War Memorial, also known as Rashtriya Samar Smarak, is a monument dedicated to honoring the soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the country. Located near India Gate in New Delhi, it is a symbol of the nation's gratitude towards its brave soldiers.
History and Significance
The idea for a national war memorial had been proposed several times over the decades, but it was only in 2014 that the project gained momentum. The memorial was built to commemorate the soldiers who died in various wars and operations, including the Indo-China War (1962), Indo-Pak Wars (1947, 1965, 1971), the Kargil Conflict (1999), and peacekeeping missions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the National War Memorial on February 25, 2019.
Design and Layout
The National War Memorial is spread over 40 acres and consists of four concentric circles, each with its unique significance:
Amar Chakra (Circle of Immortality): This circle features an obelisk with an eternal flame symbolizing the immortality of the soldiers' spirits.
Veerta Chakra (Circle of Bravery): This circle showcases bronze murals depicting various battle actions of the Indian Armed Forces.
Tyag Chakra (Circle of Sacrifice): This circle is made up of granite tablets, each bearing the names of soldiers who died in the line of duty.
Rakshak Chakra (Circle of Protection): The outermost circle is a row of trees representing the soldiers who guard the nation.
Features
Param Yodha Sthal: Adjacent to the memorial, this area is dedicated to the Param Vir Chakra awardees, the highest military decoration in India. It includes bronze busts of the awardees, along with citations of their bravery.
Names and Stories: The memorial inscribes the names of over 25,942 soldiers, serving as a poignant reminder of their sacrifice.
Interactive Information Panels: These panels provide details about the battles, soldiers, and the history of the Indian Armed Forces.
