As a South African theme park and roller coaster enthusiast, Gold Reef City and (the now defunct) Cape Town-based Ratanga Junction were my sources of adrenaline-pumping attractions. The Anaconda remains one of the smoothest, most intense inverted coasters out there. The Tower of Terror, on the other hand, is extremely intense. I was in high school when it opened with the original chain lift and mine cocopan-style ride vehicle. The G-force at the bottom had several passengers on basically each ride passed out when returning to the station. I barely made it out without blacking out. But by Jove, what a rush. When riders complained too much and for too long, the Tower of Terror remained SBNO for quite a few years, and I suspected that it would never open again. Then, lo and behold, development -- and ultimately a newer refurbished version. This time around you have OTSR which makes for a very comfortable ride. But unfortunately, the ride doesn't dangle you over the edge before dropping you down anymore. Like any good dive coaster, that element is needed. But I digress. The G-force is definitely less. But still intense enough to make some riders black out, even to this day. All in all, Gold Reef City will always hold a special place in my heart. And if you haven't visited yet, what are you waiting for?!

This is one of the most intriguing coasters to me. I’m a junkie for positive G’s with the most I’ve experienced is 5.5 on desert storm at Castles N’ Coasters. I’d love to get out to this thing and experience it. Looks like a pretty unique ride and I really enjoy the style of it. Great job on this!

How does Desert Storm of all rides pull 5.5G's?
@coyote_bravo27233 жыл бұрын
@@appalachianenthusiast9499 I’m assuming because it’s an old Hopkins ride and they weren’t too experienced when making rides. The highest G’s are pulled during the pullout of the first loop in the back row since the ride hauls through it. I read the stats from Coasterpedia and RCDB I’m pretty sure.

In my opinion, This ride has way better negative gs than positive gs, Becuase of the weird profiling and no holding break over the drop, Unlike other dive coasters, this ride’s drop has insane ejector the whole way down.

Another 2 insane facts about the ride: The original Mine Cart style trains had originally only Lapbars and Tower of Terror reportedly has one of the lowest capacities out there at 160 riders per hour, this number however is the much improved number of the redesigned version with the newer trains and elevator lift as the original design apparently only managed to get 80 riders per hours.

The lift elevator and structure reminds me a lot of Giovanola/Intamin's Free Fall drop towers. When you said the manufacturer was unknown, my first guess was "I'm sure giovanola has something to do with this"

With so many coasters worldwide themed to mining, a coaster built on an actual mine lift diving into an actual mine shaft is so interesting, especially being as bizarrely engineered as it is. Its second hand, Disney-inspired name kind of lets it down.

I road this coaster on a holiday to SA before I knew of its legendary status. After learning about it, it surprised me, because I did not think it was that intense compared to other coasters. But the change in the track explains that, because I rode it with the elevator. The ride itself was amazing and really awesome, but I have never seen a coaster that was designed so inefficient. max 1 train operations and only static magnetic brakes with no booster wheels. when the coaster hits the final breaks it slows down smoothly and then spends an eternity to creep through the breaks to the station. still a great coaster and a really nice park, would defiantly recommend it!!

I've always been super interested in this one; gold reef city as a whole too... there's a lot of interesting history on the entire park. This is great content though; never gave the manufacturer mystery much thought. The Giovanola theory definitely makes sense... id be interested to know more about how the park supposedly designed the ride in house. I know parks have done that before, but it's a huge and sophisticated ride... the POVs do make it look pretty janky, and those are newer ones. I dont know if there's footage of the ride pre-nerf, when it pulled 6Gs... I dont think a ride like that would be possible in a lot of Western countries. Also, that Giovanola tilt coaster prototype footage is crazy! (I'm assuming that's what that was...)
