I am one of the lucky one... I have visited all these locations mentioned in this video multiple times, even stayed over night in one of the watch towers in Jinshanling. Jinshanling/Simatai section of the Great Wall is so magnificent - must visit!

Amazing! One of the best documentaries I've seen about the Great Wall of China. How fascinating is that they had meticulous instructions and literature for soldiers and commanders. This shows how highly educated they were over 2000 years ago! I'm just enchanted by this whole documentary. National Geographic, please give us more episodes of history to this high level. I went to the desert section of the wall with my father in 2019, we spent 3 hours walking around the wall 20:11 trying to find artifacts, eventually we found an arrow head made of stone, ( it has a very distinctive triangular shape around 1 inch long, a quarter inch wide). Imagining ancient Chinese and Mongolian had been fighting in the exact same wasteland thousands of years ago just makes you tremble and amazed by how human civilization has comes throughout the history.

@@benoitbergeron8858 yes, they were actually the first ones to establish stable oceanic trade routes...their issue was that the later empires were extremely xenophobic, and thus decided to close the borders and cease any contact with anyone from outside china ( although they kept trading in african slaves, but unlike White people, they would demand that all black male slaves would be castrated, to prevent having any of them defile chinese women and taint their genes)...that slowed down their technological progress tremendously...if not for that, it might've been them, and not us whites, to create the most advanced society in history so far.

He was also the first emperor to standardize writing, measurements, and currency for all of China. Before him, there were many writing systems in place and the currency was madness since so many different countries had been formed and got abolished by other states(I think around 60 or 70 kings had ruled over different parts of China for over 100 years). He was one of the most important ancient figures for 1/5 of the population on earth. You can safely say he was one of the few people that truly change humanity before modern days.

Actually, the terra-cotta warriors were made based on real people, horses, and chariots, and even the size is almost the same. And what he said is that the expressions of each warrior are different, if you understand the details of this period of history, you will understand that this should be the earliest single-line accountability system in the world. It is possible to trace the person who made it according to the corresponding symbols on each pottery figure. If there is a production error, it will be either redone, or the person may face punishment or even death.

I went to JinShanLing and SiMaTai several times in the 90's, the last time being about 2002. It was not touristy way back then whereas Badaling near Beijing was just overcrowded with tourists. The views are definitely spectacular and the wall was broken in many places and also dangerous in others like one spot called "The Eagles Nest". Well worth a visit.

The wall was built by peasants, slaves, criminals, and other people that the emperor decided to punish. Soldiers were involved in building the wall and in managing the workers as well. I went to Mutianyu near Beijing 6 years ago and it was some kind of unusual time. It was not hot but very warm, the sky was strikingly blue, a big difference for typical Beijing air quality. There was no one on the wall, no one. After a long while two young school girls dressed in uniforms came up, but no one else. After sometime passed and endless gazing, I turned and almost smashed into one of the girls. In a wall completely empty of people that goes on for thousands of miles, I found this odd. I then learned they were using me as a back drop for photo's. They may not have even seen a lao wai (foreigner) in person before, to get photographic evidence especially with themselves in it was likely special. Visiting other Beijing tourist area's, Chinese also there but from outside Beijing doing the same thing would even ask for a photo but most tried to covertly take them.

Qin Shi Huang didn’t just build the Great Wall and leave behind terracotta warriors, he standardised language, script, scales and currency. Edit: why are so many westerners in the comments blabbering about the great wall death toll in ancient china? every single chinese child knows about it and we even have stories and legends of the peasants who suffered and died building the great wall. we respect them. why are white people getting on their moral high horse again? maybe you'll have space to sound so condescending if the roman empire didn't use slaves AND if your dutch, belgium, british, american ancestors didn't just have slavery a few hundred years ago and are still downplaying it today.

the beacon tower also has an interesting story, they exist back during the zhou dynasty. one of the zhou king wanted to make his lady laugh so he lit the beacon, all the lord rush to the field like rohan only to discover it was a "joke", the lady did laugh, but when the raider really attack and the beacon was lit again, the powerful lord didn't came and the king had to flee, escorted only by the horse keeper who still came to the signal. as reward for escorting the king to safety, the horse keeper were given the land that was raided, this became what would be the Qin Dynasty that would eventually end Zhou and unified China... this is also partly why the other states tend to look down in Qin as they are not seen as particularly noble having descended from people that breed and care for horses for a living... of course they ain't laughing no more when they got conquered.
