fun fact: Camarena had never hit a hr in the minor leagues since he joined in 2012. So his first professional hr came on his first hit ever in the big leagues (second total at bat), with the bases loaded, against Max Scherzer, on a ball 3 inches below his knees. Better than Bartolo's? I'd say so.

I have to admit, my spirits were pretty low when Camarena came up to bat. Especially after he took the first pitch for a strike and stepped out the box to practice swing. I rolled my eyes and figured we were in for a typical pitcher strike-out. Then he fouled one off at a pretty good distance and that gave me just a glimmer of hope and I wondered “what if…” Then when he hit it out I couldn’t believe it, I was stunned. After that grand slam the entire tone shifted and you could just feel it was the Padres game. Even though they were still down 2, I wasn’t really worried at all, I knew they could win it. Also this is why the DH is for babies, there is no reason why pitchers can’t hit. It makes for more exciting moments and makes way for a new breed of pitcher like Shohei, which has been long overdue in my opinion.
@SpiderMan61913 жыл бұрын
couldn't have said it better myself! literally my exact same thoughts as you watching this live! "Oh no, not our pitcher with 2 outs! 3 years later and this is still one of my top 3 favorite Padres games of the 2020s, probably of all time as well. The Camarena grand slam was merely the cherry on top, there was so much more to this game. The constant robbing of hits by both teams, the gloom Padres fans felt looking at that 8-0 score, there was so much going on at all times that just made this game EXTREMELY entertaining to watch. Not to mention this was not at all the last amazing Nats-Padres moment: Only a short time later, the Padres had that iconic 24-8 game against whom? The Nats of all teams. And after all of that, two of the Nats players went to the Padres the following season, can you believe that?
@luiss.38663 жыл бұрын
I saw this game I was shocked when Camarena hit a grandslam. I've never seen scherzer play this nervous. Walks and hit by pitch and keep in mind the nats were up 8 - 0 so there wasnt really that much he should have been nervous about.
@brianwhiting32803 жыл бұрын
That wasn't Scherzer. Hit batters? Walking in a run? I've followed this guy since Detroit, he's one of the coolest heads ever to play the game. Enjoy because this will probably never come close to happening ever again. Something to tell your grandkids about.

@@brianwhiting3280 im talking about what the nats did to him in the nlds. They pretty much helped solidify his post season status as a choker. Keep in mind before he entered the mound people were afraid he would lose us the chance to win a world series in 2019 and in only a few minutes he would end up giving back 2 back homers to tie it and eventually lead to the end of our world series hopes.
@brianwhiting32803 жыл бұрын
@@luiss.3866 I definitely remember that, but he had already been crowned king of the playoff chokers by that point. It was already sad that you went down 8 runs to Washington but good thing you showed that you definitely are the better team tonight!!

I can imagine Eminem's "Lose Yourself" playing in Camarena's head during that at bat. 😂

Padres should sign more home town kids. First, Musgrove deliver the first no-no, and then this, a reliever just called up hit a grand slam against one of the greatest pitcher in the era on his first at-bat.

The way Scherzer was cruising after 3 innings, the game was supposed to be over or at least 99% of us believed so at one point.
