I remember the first time I saw KZbin. It was early into my first semester in college. I was working in a computer lab and looked over at my friends monitor. He was watching Naruto. I thought something like “video playing on a web browser?” Kind of blew my mind. I asked him the name of the website and typed it in. Originally thought it was specifically made for anime. Was surprised that there was a bunch of random stuff on it. Ah yes, and no ads. It was a magical time.

I completely agree with Gladwell, and I think it extends to pop culture. As Walter Cronkite once said, had Star Wars been a year early, it would've been another Buck Rogers, too late, and it wouldn't have captured the imagination. It came out at the precise time after Vietnam and Watergate when movies were downbeat and negative. I think some people and projects strike gold, not necessarily because they're the best or smartest, or most innovative, but the timing was just too perfect.

If you're doing a history of KZbin, please, please make a video about KZbin Streams. It was a chatroom feature on the site from around 2008, that was way ahead of its time, allowing content creators to chat with subscribers/friendslist, share videos, etc. It was the predecessor to stuff like Twitch or Discord, but KZbin nuked it as it was getting really popular. You can only find a few videos showing the topic these days, as it's all been muted out by 'livestreaming' or 'streaming services' instead. I would love to see this topic get covered, so younger generations can see what they missed out on in the early KZbin days.

I always found that stupid. Why did Janet get so much flack for that? It truly wasnt her fault yet everyone went to give her backlash? Then again, I'd be the kind of person to brush that kind of event off even if I saw it live. It just seems so whatever to me. In fact that's not even how I found out who Janet was. I found out who she was cause she sampled Sonic 1's Bridge Zone music. Funky.

I was a freshman in college when KZbin came out. I had a web server that I'd upload videos to and send the links to friends, saying "why would someone want to watch a video, and not have a permanent copy in their archive?". Well obviously most people didn't care. But I still use software to archive many of the KZbin videos I watch. There's nothing more troubling than the media you remember one way, being edited into something else. When you've got the file, you've got an unchanging reference.

What i think makes KZbin so unique is the fact that it wasn't mainstream. Nothing required your content to have mass appeal. Want to make a video about cheesemaking? Sure, go ahead. Might take you a while, but you'll find people who enjoy it.

My first interaction with KZbin was back in 2005 in a middle school computer lap watching funny videos with 10 other people standing behind me. Just one thing: it seems pretty clear at this point that there was no Janet Jackson slipup. And people could tell once they got uncensored versions of the video. Jackson clearly had her nipples covered up, ready to be shown. And, of course, Timberlake was in on it, yet never got the backlash that Jackson did.

KZbin opened a lot of opportunities for online videos on the web and it also gave lots of opportunities to a lot of people in a lot of different ways on platform. We've came so far in technology for almost 20 years of youtube's existence and among other technological improvements and growth over the years. Now we as the people who helped fuel the foundation of the video streaming concept at the beginning of youtube's existence spreading like wildfire, we look back at it and recognize that we made history that shaped to what youtube is today along with the technology improvements that eventually came into fruition over the years. It amazes me how much we evolved and changed over the span of the glory days for youtube that it was once was.

As someone who's been there. In my humble opinion. People like Smosh and those "influencers" and "content creators" (bleg) wasn't what made early KZbin. It was the AMVs, the KZbin Poops, the Abridged series and parody fandubs, and the wannabe AVGNs. It was transformative media (and also pirated stuff). Like sure Smosh was important and big and whatever but they're a portion of what old KZbin was.
@Mallen151
@Mallen151 Жыл бұрын
For what it’s worth, I do love the stuff the stuff that you mentioned but I would argue that they are also just one piece of what made early KZbin great. KZbin was and is great because literally anyone can post videos that they’re passionate about and everyone has easy access to it. I loved channels similar to Smosh, geriatric and LisaNova but I had already been watching KZbin for years before I ever checked Smosh out and I had never even heard of geriatric or LisaNova before this video. However, it’s clear that those three did have large followings. The stuff that you mentioned was great and it was popular but it also wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. The beauty of KZbin for me is that if someone did want AMVs or YTPs, they could find them. If someone came across, AMVs and YTPs but didn’t care for them, they could go back to the search bar and find a million videos that did interest them!
@ZackarySmigel

I agree that poops, abridged series, AMVs, and others were transformative and a monumental influence. I could have covered plenty of other content creators or trends in that section, but I tried to highlight a few unique examples that really stood out during that 2005-2006 era. Smosh, Geriatric1927, and LisaNova were three of the most prominent creators in terms of subscriber count. Smosh and Geriatric1927, specifically, both at one point, had the most subscribers on the platform; that's a testament to their impact back then. With all that being said, I agree, and perhaps later on, we can cover more of those content creators, video trends, and styles that had a colossal impact on the platform!

And it’s extremely trippy how there’s kids who are now IN SCHOOL who weren’t even born yet when KZbin became a phenomenon. "a time when many people were even still using dial-up" bro i remember those ads with the tortoises, it was still enough of a thing in like 07 to warrant ads saying "hey r u using dsl? you are? loser. use our service". hell remember when having an unlimited number of texts was a selling point? like, in america, in ads targeted towards at least sort of well off people???

The time from 2003-2007 was era of tech revolution that changed lives of people where we are today especially in Computing and Communication. In 2003, the NT Based Windows XP that was modern OS at that time surpassed all the OSes in month September. Windows XP was first step of NT Modern Computing and gave rise to Vista / 7 / 8.x / 10 & 11. KZbin started in 2004 and became functional in 2005; but due to limited we had to struggle with video buffering 😂😂 but now KZbin runs smoothly. There was no concept of 3G even then; but we are using 5G now a days. Keypad Mobiles especially Nokia was king of Mobile Market. Apple intronduced first iPhone in 2007 and now a days smartphones are much common and faster than computers of that era with high speed Internet and processing speed and memory. I remember I bought my Computer in November 2003 having Windows 98 at 4 GB Hard Disk and 64 MB Ram; but even my Mobile has 128 GB ROM and 6 GB Ram and my Laptop has 16 GB Ram and 1TB SSD. Previously there was a camera we took on rent during family functions with Fuji Film or Kodak reel with almost 36 Pictures capacity; but even our Smartphone Cameras are much better in resolution and available all the time. I remember in 2008; I opened a KZbin video (1 min duration), I had to wait almost 2 hours to buffer it to watch with low quality; but now even 3 hrs+ video runs smoothly in high resolution without any wait. If someone remembers; there was Dial UP network and you had a card with limited internet hours; but no even public places had free high speed WiFi provided by Govt of the area. Literally, the era 2003-2007 also played a huge role for 90's Generation to take them in 00's revolutioned worlds. It seems a like miracle . Thank You all and I wish you all the best in their lives and I also pray whoever reads this long comment may fulfill all the dreams and get whatever that want. Love you all :)

My classmates and me uploaded our first video back in 2005 when we heard about KZbin. We made a really goofy irl Spiderman movie of about 8 min. Took us a whole day to upload. Only one of my classmates had sufficient bandwidth and a limitless contract with his isp at home. So we used his connection and his account to upload this. Unfortunately he deleted his account some years later when we finished school and all got out of touch. Man I would pay real money to see our video again, good times.

oh man...my account was registered sometime around 2006 or so, I registered it back then because i saw an ad on Myspace for it, it was this hot new video website that let you watch stuff, and it can be embedded inside a Myspace profile. Everyone was doing it at the time before Myspace died. My account is probably one of those few in existence that is still active today, a lot of them became inactive, and even the ones that later became a big KZbinr became inactive as well. I think now, channels like Smosh, iJustine, NationSquid etc, are the only surviving channels from that era and still going strong. Then there is my channel, never made it big, but also never went inactive.

I had a couple friends make their accounts around that time too, but after a couple of months/years not many of us old users left on here. I created my account in mid 2005. It was revolutionary at the time.

This is a good video but KZbin wasn’t made or built for necessarily these types of videos cause if you didn’t know a Super Bowl incident that happened way back where a lady accidentally flashed the audience was actually something that contributed for the founders of KZbin to actually make KZbin because they wanted to find the video
