When the Great Famine struck Ireland in the 1840's members of the Choctaw Nation, a native American tribe from Oklahoma sent $170 dollars to Ireland to help alleviate the suffering. The Choctaw people who had been forced from their own lands identified with the struggle the Irish were facing with the British presence in Ireland. Some 170 years later it was Ireland's turn to return the favor. Enjoy this great story courtesy of NBC.

Precisely. The famine was of British design, it was a forced famine meant to starve and eradicate. Just calling it a famine makes it sound like a natural event, when in reality the Irish were cultivating a wide variety of foods in addition to potatoes, but all other crops aside from potatoes were stolen by British occupation forces, leaving the Irish only one source of food.

@@lennon1482 Their was an abundance of food in Ireland; grains of all sorts, vegetables, sheep, cattle, pigs etc. The British Colonial Forces commandeered all this food for their soldiers and tea companies in East India or for sale in London. Those Irish trying to get their hands on this food were executed. The tenant farmers in Ireland were forbidden by law to own any land, and the only crop they were allowed to grow, by law, was the potato. When this failed, the Occupying English literally let them starve to death by the side of the road. It was not "a Famine", but enforced starvation. The now famous book "The Great Hunger" describes in great detail this horrific time in Irish history. There are also many excellent documentaries on this subject.

Here in Scotland we should also be donating. The Cherokees met, appointed a relief committee, and in May 1847, sent $190 to a New York bank "for the relief of those who are suffering by the famine in Scotland." That is an interesting story, never heard of that one. Thanks. As a Scot, however, I am aware that many from this country displaced and terrorized the native populations of North America as well as elsewhere... we were particularly prominent in the colonisation of East and West Canada for instance. So in many ways our debt is not fulfilled - as also, the debt of many of the landowners over here is not, to the people they displaced. But anyway, nice to hear of such a gesture. When I first learned of the potato famine in Ireland I thought that it was eerily similar to the loss of our great buffalo herds in the 1870's where many of our people died of starvation. I am from the northern plains and I live on a Cree nation but my ancestors are also the Sioux and Assiniboine people. This is a very nice story about humanity, and caring. Thank you Ireland, and all Irish people.

Before I traveled to Ireland from the US for the first time ever, I did so as a Black American and a Baha'i after having read a couple of books about the Irish Famine. I felt their pain because I know what cruelty can be like by a dominant group in the US growing up in Jim Crow Mississippi in the 50's and 60's. Just as the Irish must have felt after how the British treated them during that era. Cromwell was one who epitomized the culture of cruelty that evolved in Britain towards the Irish due to prejudice and bigoted attitudes at the times when Britain seized land and resources from the Irish. A Baha'i friend knowing that I was planning to travel sent me an article about the wonderful and humane gesture of the Choctaw people to send money to Ireland on behalf of the famine victims. I was so touched and jolted by this magnanimous gesture from a Native American tribe, and learned that a monument had been erected somewhere in Cork County.

As a seven year old child I was fortunate to spent time in the US, staying with my father's family in Williamsburg, Virginia. I was obsessed with Native American culture and was thrilled to meet an old couple who were elders of the Iraquoi tribe. The man's name, as I recall it, was Chief Richard. He and his wife gave me a small piece of coral, which became one of my most treasured possessions. When I eventually went back to visit the Jamestown area in my twenties I met several native Americans in the Jamestown area who were from the Rappahannock tribe. Their kindness and patience with me, when I was something of a wild young man, left a deep impression on me. I'm immensely proud of my Irish roots, so knowing there is such a special bond between the people of Ireland and the people of the Choctaw Nation - and how that bond was formed through their common humanity - gives me a great sense of comfort in these troubling times.

As someone with Irish and Cherokee ancestry, this hit me... i always felt deep down there was a bond between he Irish and the Native Americans. I remember the stories of how when the Irish first migrated to the Americas to escape the potato famine, they were subjugated, demonized and hated by the Americans who lived here who at the time were waging a protestant cultural war against Catholics from Ireland, many Irish immigrants were forced to work slave labor and cultural crimes were committed against the Irish immigrants. We survived by developing bonds with African American and the Native American communities who shared but experienced even worse fates and history of subjugation than we did. We at least still had the benefit of being from Europe even if Ireland was hated by the English at the time. In either case it makes me happy to see that this bond has not been forgotten. I also just donated to a native American charity to show my appreciation for that ancestral bond and everything they provided us when we were in need.
