Native fish: Spotted Galaxias (Galaxias truttaceus) Tasman Peninsula, Tasmania

These beautiful Spotted Galaxias were filmed in a freshwater creek on the Tasman Peninsula. In 2019 I filmed the fish when I first visited the creek (see my earlier videos). In 2022 I was lucky enough to return and find a very healthy population of this species, no doubt largely due to the absence of introduced trout in this area. This video was filmed by drifting my camera in a larger open pool area (seen at the start of the footage), that was an overflow of the main creek channel. I could see rings from fish rising but was most surprised to see how many fish there cruising this pool when I got home and downloaded the footage. This 'pool' environment was quite different to the rocky habitat of the creek itself. This will be one of several videos showing the fish in this area; stay tuned for more.

thanks, I've still got a couple more videos to come from this creek as I was lucky enough to spend a couple of afternoons down there. Also had a couple of surprises on my footage!

thanks, hope you get to go back down there again one day too, I spent a lovely few hours on a couple of afternoons just poking around down there with my cameras and taking it all in

Nice work Greg. I have just returned from a month's holiday in Tasmania. After watching this delightful scene, I'm even more excited to go back.

There are some special places down there. I only had a chance to visit this stream, but would love to get to some of the other places and explore for fish.
