That was very helpful! First, the "carpet rule". You can play many notes by not following it, but they aren't on the pentatonic scale and probably won't sound good. The part about adjusting your breath for each note is critical to eliminate bad notes. And finally, making sure the holes are completely covered. It's easy to *think* you are doing so and yet not be.

good instruction for a beginner, and...once you have mastered the pentatonic scale on NAF, this finger rule should be ignored. The fact is that a six hole NAF that is tuned in a traditional five note pentatonic minor scale can produce a diatonic scale by using the proper finger positions. Half note hole coverings will actually allow for half measure notes...there are over a full octave of notes possible. Check on the web for NAF note tablature diagrams showing the finger positions for full diatonic octaves.
