My husband is half Athabasca and half Cree and he gets told all the time he doesn't "look native", and that he's "just trying not to pay the taxes". Like... What!? Lol. He has long black gorgeous hair, beautiful dark brown eyes, and incredible copper-coloured skin. People are horrible. Funny enough I'm also indigenous, just not from North America. I am Sámi, from Lappland, in Finland, and I get told I don't look Sámi a lot, even by other Sámi, mostly because I have naturally bright red hair, which comes from my mother's side of the family, whose family history in Scotland, on the Orkney islands, is traced back at least 1200 years. It's so crazy to me that someone can say that someone else is not who they are just because they look a little different than what they think we should, when the truth is that people from all.over the world have been spreading their genetics across oceans for millennia, and we are all beautiful!!

Excellent comment
@Skarlett.Rose.Ink.5 ай бұрын
@@LeeRoss-bw3yd Yeah. I've heard that saying before. It's an old wives tale, as they are often referred to. But really it's just genetics, and genetics are a lot of fun! It's not "skipping a generation". It's just a matter of the parents not having the proper dominant and/or recessive genes to have various traits passed on and expressed in their offspring. ##$t is the exact same with any ethnicity. It is entirely dependent on what individual genes are carried by the mother and the father. For example, red hair is a recessive gene, meaning that even if both of my parents have dark hair, if they are each carriers of the gene for red hair then it is possible that their child could be a redhead, but if only one of them had that gene than no matter what they will never have a child with red hair. So, again, any trait can be hidden in any generation if the parents either have or are missing specific genes. I love genetics!!!
@MakeYourOwnMind5 ай бұрын
@@Skarlett.Rose.Ink.That's me! I received all the recessive genes in my family, and don't look like anyone I'm related to. I used to think I was adopted but my DNA is a close match with my parents, so I guess I'm theirs. My brother looks extremely Indigenous and I got none of it. Ha!

Black Indians, or African-Native Americans, are descendants of Indigenous peoples of Africa and the Americas and the Caribbean. The first Black Indians were enslaved Africans who escaped from European colonists and joined Native American tribes in what is now the United States as early as 1502 and 1526. These alliances and allegiances led to shared kinship, including intermarriage between enslaved Africans and Native Americans. However, their marriages were often not legally considered legitimate, and their children were also considered slaves. Black Indians have developed rich cultural expressions that have influenced American life for over 500 years, including music, dance, craft, and food. They have also faced centuries of government policies and laws that have oppressed and excluded them, but have found creative ways to fight back and establish blended communities

I'm not sure what tribe my ancestors belonged to but we were born in northern Sonora, MX, where there is around 8 tribes but Yaqui is the most talked about. My grandparents have all passed and our family was not much for passing along the stories and history of our ancestors. I wish I could connect with my native roots to pass it to my son, instead of feeling like an outcast.

Some folks out there don’t understand that Mexican is a nationality, not a race. You could be any race from all around the world from being brown, white, black, yellow from Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and the Middle East and if that person decided to move to Mexico completely and become a Mexican citizen then they are Mexican. There are Irish Immigrants that moved from Ireland to Mexico many moons ago and ended up becoming Mexican citizens and now they are Mexican. Look up the “Battle of the San Patricios" St. Patrick's Battalion" If it wasn’t for Spain colonization of many countries in Latin America in 1493, the Spanish language wouldn’t ever existed in South and Central America. The only language that was spoken before the Spanish arrival was the native languages by the indigenous people such as the Aztecs, Mayans and so on. The only country in the central region that wasn’t colonized by the Spanish was Brazil since Spain was like, you could have it Portugal since Brazilians speak Portuguese as the main language 😎🍻.
