Blackbird nesting - from building the nest to leaving the nest

On the 11th September 2016 we noticed a blackbird building a nest in a shrub just outside our back door. I started filming the nest being built which I thought was fascinating enough, but then.....she laid an egg. This is a short compilation of all the video footage I captured from building the nest to leaving the nest.
The first egg was laid on the 17th September 2016. The baby birds hatched on the 2nd October and left the nest on the 15th October. It was a privilege to have a sneak peek into the nest and witness the interactions between the parents and siblings.
What was not captured on video was how well the parents coordinated protecting the nest while searching for food. It was rare for both parents to be away from the nest at the same time and they usually kept guard over the nest from a fence or tree while the other went for food. It made it difficult sometimes to mount the camera without disturbing them.

You made me laugh.. its true, nature is Gods wonder.. a horse get up n walk within few minutes, birds fighting as soon theupy born ( eagles) geeses are whoever survive, and etc, but us we dont even roll u ntil 3-4 mo. Walked at 11 mo and dont talk til 2 perfect, or understandable, and we try to leavehome but we cant till you really 18, and ger married legally and fair u til 21-25 we dont have kids still 13-60; myniece was 13 and when i was pregnant for my first i was 22 n the lady next to me was 60 with her 15 child, dont ask me i was in silence .. it seems nature is faster than us.. lolol

This is beautiful! They are little predators, but so defenseless when young. What I find so sweet is that the adult bird that we see is what they will grow into. That adult was just like them (not so long ago).

I have a blackbird nest on my balcony right now :) they are at day 6 :) there are 4 younglings and i am helping the parents with fresh water and some seeds and fruits. The female just adores strawberries :D I love them

Something similar happened to me. My family left out the Christmas wreath from two years ago, and just this year when I got back from the Philippines, there was a nest, and three little baby birds in it! It took probably, almost, the same amount of time it took for these little guys to grow! I late found out that they were House Finches. I'm so happy that I got to see them grow. A few months later (last month) I asked my mom if we were gonna get another wreath to leave out for the birds XD.

Truly magnificent video of their growth👌🏻💕I have a resident male who joins me every morning while I have coffee. We chat over daily affairs...well I chat, he listens, lol. Finally paired up this Spring & she moved in & had babies. No joke, both mum & dad came to me one morning both alarmed. Realised one of their babies was stuck in the garage & let him or her free. Family reunited. Also became Bird Nanny to a spotted dove fledgling who was bailed up by my dogs. Became babysitter for a solid week while it patiently waited to gain strength enough to become independent. Mum & dad continuing to care for it too. Family now doing well, so much so that mum has now nested again. Looks like she sees me as a good back up too as she has now taken to nest in my pagola where I sit daily only a metre away. Currently waiting for new babies to hatch literally just above me. My backyard has become quite the Bird Nursery this year🐦🐣💛

I love blackbirds!!! They have so much character! We have a resident male who is so sneaky. If we leave the front door open then he comes in and steals the cat biscuits lol! Honestly it's at the point now where the cats actually see him as part of the family and not a prey item.

I found a baby robin in my backyard fallen from its nest. I didn’t know what to do because if I took it and put it somewhere safe the mother would attack me, but I took it to this little cage thing in my shed. He’s still In it and I feed him worms and bird feed! Edit: he is still in the cage, and almost fully grown. I take him outside every now and then to get him used to the big world.

Thank you for this lovely video. I have black birds nesting in an overgrown jasmine in my garden , been watching them nest build and knew they were feeding their young and can hear the hungry cheeping from the nest as mum and dad come back to feed them. Unfortunately I found a fledgling dead in the garden only a few feet away from where they are nesting I gauge this to be about 7 to 8 days old from watching this. I will be keeping a watchful eye out for the rest of them to see if I can see the rest of them make their move. Hopefully nothing happens to the rest of them. Any ideas how this could have happened? There is definitely no way it could have been cats because of where it is( very high up, level with top of a first floor window and well tucked away). Can they just push each other out sometimes, accidentally?

There was a Blackbird family on a lemon bush that my parents hat planted in the backyard and in that area a the female had been makimg the nest and she used mud on the top I myself had seen the Adult Female holding something that was light from the ground in it's mouth. Plus the Nest was next to my mom's bedroom and right outside the window in her bedroom, and on the right from what the window is showing was the nest. I even saw the 3 chicks opening mouths for mom and dad to feed. We did not see the chicks from day 1, instead from day 6 they have left on November 14 3 days ago but the blackbird mom and dad still are there probably having a nest somwhere else. I’ve found 3 in my garden eyes not even open, so made a little nest. No sign of mum, 1 died & the other 2 are still there. Looks like mums not come yet, but I hope they find strength & fly asap. They are just so so small though & don’t know what to do. I live in 🇬🇧 so it’s also cold outside right now. Made a natural as possible nest for them 🙏🏼 hopefully they’ll survive in the natural habitat & survive

this is brilliant we had a blackbird chick from around 3 or 4 days, they leave the nest after about 2 weeks but the parents keep feeding them, and that takes ages and ages and ages, speaking as the one who was feeding the blackbird, and then theres a lot of being around but still getting fed ! Lovely lovely film, and really nice because id always wondered if I did it right and it appears I was pretty much a blackbird ! Thank you
