It's a radar! It contains two antennas inside, one for the primary radar system and the other for the identification-friend-or-foe (IFF) system. The beams from these radars can extend for 385 miles, allowing controllers to see down to surface to detect ships and low-flying planes and into the stratosphere to detect missiles.

All these planes are old and going strong instead of Royal Air Force E3D who are more recent re-engined and withdrawal will start soon replaced by 737 E7 wedgetail!! Our French E3F will last until frame be out of breath!!!!
