E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning & Control System. Take-Off, Landing, Interior Shots

NATO's "Eye in the Sky" or Airborne Warning & Control System (#AWACS) plays a crucial role in the security of the Euro 2012 Football Tournament over the next three weeks. Poland, as co-host of the competition along with Ukraine has requested the air surveillance and control capability of NATO AWACS to safeguard the event. The NATO AWACS is the Alliance's largest collaborative program and celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. I really like this video! I have never seen the insides of one of these aircraft. They have some fancy consoles inside! Looks reals sophisticated! What's the average lengths of these flights? Are any AWACS planes ever used for weather reconnaissance squadrons out of curiosity?

kenpalmer1965 Depends what you are doing I've flown 6 hour flights and 22 hour flights. Combat sorties are usually a lot longer. Weather recon is usually done with turboprop aircraft.

faabound Out of curiosity, why do they primarily use prop aircraft for weather reconnaisance flights? I saw one video in which a twin-engine learjet type of aircraft was used in a Hurricane Hunter or Chaser project flight.

There are hurricane/weather aircraft flown out of Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS. IIRC, they were C-130 variants. AWACS is intended for airborne radar and control, but with expanded communications capabilities for coordination with the ground as well.

That button function might not be classified but the functions of other components near that button might be. A lot of times some interior shots are purposely blurred out for that exact reason.

I'm pretty sure the U is stuck to the return marker and its vector. It indicates what the unit is. Upside down U most likely is friendly aircraft. Designated either by the operator or datalink.
