How come it's just now become "Putin's doorstep"? I didn't know we where in "his sphere", but rather that he wants to be in our sphere.

The reindeer in Finland are all actually owned by someone. The owners practise traditional form of live stock management with them, where the reindeer roam free and are rounded up together once or twice a year. They all have earmarks with them to identify the owner. But it's not just the reindeer, they also account for moose like said, and swans, or really any wildlife they possibly can

The real reason why the Finnish Army is very careful not to kill or injure any reindeer is that if any are killed or injured the Army must pay a hefty sum in compensation for the owners of the reindeer. The reindeer owners have a habit of deliberately herding the reindeer into the firing range in order to try to bait a sweet compensation sum from the Army if/when reindeer are hit.

Back then, reindeer owners pushed their reindeer into it because if they got killed, the state bought the carcasses at a market price and they saved the butcher's fee. And we conscripts got to eat reindeer in the field kitchens for three days straight.
