​@@itoobot Frugal... The joint strike fighter program springs to mind in its boundless frugality. Especially when you look at the mission profile Canada would require it for. They have such high maintenance requirements they spend more time broken than flying. Our procurement program is so beyond broken that major cap programs take 12 years on average for deployment. Our military is about as capable as a wet paper bag at the moment. The cycle of history sees our military gutted time and time again only to be needed but then the cost is enormous. Kicking a problem down the road is not frugal.

Since the end of WW2 both traditional governing parties of Canada has sold out Canada’s military. My years of service witnessing 1967-96. Both cut military numbers. Both cut personnel. Both delayed equipment replacements. Both clawed back or cut budgets. Bth make big announcements about procurement & then delayed or canceled. The Canadian voters have never made the status of the Canadian military a voting priority. Both play to that & take their cue from that. NATO & NORAD allies have every right to call Canada out. Technology can always be used for multi-purpose purposes, including agriculture, computers, chip design, software, and health-related purposes. I recently drove beside a canadian military convoy heading out of victoria for training and it looked like a bunch of rusted out hulks that CVSE would condemn if they were pulled over for an inspection. It was wild to see the state of disrepair the equipment was, and all the soldiers uniforms looked like 4th or 5th generations hand me downs. Sad stuff

As a Canadian I'm proud of our country in many ways but as far as defence spending goes, it's an embarrassment. We should be spending AT LEAST 2%, but 3% would be better. Not only do we need to pull our weight with out allies but we have to protect our own turf better, particularly the arctic. I want peace but to have peace one has to prepare for war, and we aren't prepared enough.
