I am dumbfounded that the Canadian Government has nothing like this in its inventory 🇨🇦

Good concept! It's an oiler/carrier.

I believe the classification is a combat support and resupply ship.

The Karel Doorman Class Frigates are going to be replaced, not the Joint Support Ship named "Karel Doorman".

Not true at all. 25 ships will be replaced in the comming decade, but not this one.

This is the fourth one named Karel Doorman. The first was an aircradt carrier (1946-48), the second one also (1948-68) and the third one a frigate (1991-2006), now serving in the Belgian navy as Leopold I

Karel Doorman was a rear admiral who died during the fights against the Japanese Navy in the Java sea back in 1942

I don't know why but modern warships of all types look oversized to me for the weapons they have.
@rungfang27 Жыл бұрын
Well they replaced large guns with missiles, and aircraft. So the small 76mm, 56mm guns are for small craft now. But ya it kind of looks comical!
@ThomasStell7 ай бұрын
That's not a true warship. It's an auxiliary designed to carry supplies and even troops who are deployed by small craft and helicopters.

WWII sailors slept in hammoks and free spaces were really small. XIX century sailors sleep among ammunition. Today, warship's habitability is much better. Not only for crew comfort but for better operability, maintenance, "general quarters" situation and for damage control. Also modern medium size warships (like corvettes, frigates and destroyers) have aviation facilities, like helipad and hangars. But also need helicopter fuel, tools, supplies, etc. All those things need space. WWII destroyers and Frigates didn't.
