Would love some advice Jay, we get our puppy in October. Do all puppies require this? When do you start? How long do you leave it on per day? Is it for a few hours/all day? When do you stop taping?

Hi Emily. I’m so sorry I didn’t see your question. No not all will need it- some ears crease perfectly, but small ears usually fly up and out.

I appreciate this. I have an American Bully / Lab cross puppy. One of her ears behaves beautifully, flopping forward. But the other wants to fold back in a rose ear. I'm not a fan of rose ears at all and was trying to figure out how to fix the less than pleasant one. I did some massage work, stretching out the muscles that keep pulling the ear back, which helped. But it doesn't help enough. Now I know that I can tape them to fix that. In fact, I think I will tape them both. I just hope it's not too late. She's 4 months old now. (I only got her a month ago.) Her cartilage is very thin and soft, so I'm hoping this will work for her still. Thank you for making this video and sharing it with us.

Thanks MJL. It doesn't always work, but will make a difference to some extent especially if you start early enough. The cartilage hardens by 12 weeks, so it's more difficult to fix. Good luck - just seen your comment is 5 months old. Did it work out?

how long does it take to correct the ear with taping?
@jayhorgan7 жыл бұрын
Depends when you start - the earlier the better. If you can keep it on for a few weeks /changing when needed, you should find when you take it off that the ears stay natural. Never wrap tightly obviously, and always the ear must breathe. The dog doesn't notice after the first 10 mins.

Hi, It's really important to tape ears by the time they are 12 weeks at least, as that is when the cartilage hardens and fixes the ears in position. When I was a baby, my mother sellotaped my ears back to stop them sticking out like my father's :-) Worked well. Good luck

So how long will you have to keep the ears taped in order to get a permanent result?
@jayhorgan5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Much depends on how early you start. By 12 weeks, cartilage has started to harden, so it's essential to start as early as possible to train the ear to sit right. As long as the tape isn't irritating the puppy, I'd leave it on for a few weeks - obviously changing the tape every few days. Goes without saying never to use insulation tape like one breeder did - caused an infection, and obviously tape to allow air flow to the ear. Good luck :-)

So sorry I didn't see this. At that age it is due to teething, so it's essential to tape the ears before the cartilage fully fixes around 12 weeks ideally. Any time after that is pretty much pot luck.

Hi Mia. It is a Cosmetic reason. Just as my mother taped my ears back with sellotape to stop them sticking out (my father had very sticky out ears and she was afraid mine would be the same), that is why it is done. The puppy was not afraid (she was just wriggly), and it doesn’t hurt so no harm is done. Nothing g is chopped off or broken. Just looks a bit nicer than sticking out ears.

If it’s a German Pinscher we’re talking about, I’d say leave those ears alone and let those floppy terrier ears grow with him, honestly what are you doing, I personally think having down ears such as a Labrador or mastiff, looks absolutely weird for a German Pinscher , probably ugly. In my case for standards, and personally let it grow with button ears or rose ears.
