00:00 Natural Full spectrum LED light for aquarium
00:05 My aquariums get only natural indirect sunlight coming from the window.
Here you can see my 29 gallon tank in the middle of the day.
It is my largest self-feeding sustainable aquarium with land plants growing on the top.
Every month or so I remove about half of fast growing aquatic plants from my aquariums.
I use it for making fish food flakes.
I would not argue that the aquarium looks dark without additional light :)
Though, all my aquariums have been doing very well with this natural light only for decades.
May 18th, 2024
00:42 I got a hygger full spectrum LED light to check if it would make any difference for my aquarium.
The 22 watt HG089 model comes packed with a long list of features.
I pick it for the size suitable for my aquarium to start with.
There are variations of HG089 with different power and number of LEDs suitable for different tanks.
Most interestingly, all HG089 models have removable brackets.
Adjustable and removable brackets make it super easy to fit the way I want it!
Read the manual.
I posted the manual on my blogpost (link in the description to the video).
The HG089 LED light is waterproofed.
Attaching and adjusting brackets could not be simpler than that :)
It fits different-sized aquariums - I love it!
10 lighting color modes.
6, 8 and 12 hours timer modes.
There are 20 brightness levels.
I am very interested in trying the 24/7 natural lighting mode.
DIY mode for adjusting brightness and RGB colors in full spectrum.
The full spectrum makes it suitable for aquatic and land plants in my tank.
Just for the record - I have a 30inch long aquarium.
I want to place the LED light on the top of the cover.
02:35 And...let's turn it ON.
Ta-dam! Beautiful!!
I've never seen my land moss so pretty!
The brackets are supposed to be turned the other way for hanging the LED on an aquarium without cover.
It takes seconds to adjust the brackets.
I want to move the LED light to the back of the tank.
That is where plants need light the most.
This HG089 22 watt LED is 22inch long without the brackets.
Now I can open the front part of the cover for easy access inside without moving the light.
03:18 The land platform serves for growing land plants and culturing live food for my fish.
I am going to make another video to explain more about this land platform.
Right now I have 3 different types of land mosses growing here.
I cleared up the back part of the platform to allow light from the LED to shine through into the tank.
That's how it all looks like with LED lights ON.
Everything looks so much better with LED lights :)
03:55 The same aquarium without LED lights looks dull in comparison.
Among all RGB and DIY modes I am personally interested in 24/7 mode imitating the natural daylight cycle.
So, the next morning I turned on the 24/7 mode starting at 6am.
I will make a time-lapse video to show it.
The hygger HG089 LED works very well!
Check links in the description.
Have fun and happy aquariums :)

Thank you! I like the daylight 24/7 mode - it changes the color and intensity through the day. The fish seem to like it too. Aquatic plants will certainly benefit from more light. My only concern for now is how the land plants would be affected - they are inches away from the LED. It could be too much for them. Time will show. I certainly will put an update about it.

Very interesting indeed Michael, thank you very much. I’ve been thinking about lighting for my future aquarium so this video was certainly timely! I shall be watching your updates most attentively. God bless you 🙏✝️. ✌️🇷🇺☮️🇺🇦✌️. 🙋‍♀️🤍🇮🇱✌️ P.S. l have quite a few baby snails now who absolutely adore carrot slices, I have to ration them or they would literally live on them!! ✌️

Thank you very much! I am going to use LED only in this aquarium to see if it makes difference for land plants. Without land platforms there is no need for full spectrum LED - aquatic plants would get enough light. Though, RGB lights make aquariums look way better. I used them for fun 😉also it works much better using any light with tiled background on the back of the aquariums - years back I published a video about it. Single point or spotlight LED lights work wonders in appearance of aquariums. Night time is the show time for this 🙂✌️

RGB? I can’t think what that means, I was asleep but great to hear from you 👍

Red, Green, Blue mixed together make white color. Mixed in different proportions make any color. That’s been used in color printers and LED lights. The full spectrum Natural LED is more advanced offering not just color but also particular light wavelengths beneficial to plants. You can use any LED lighting for decoration. Though, full spectrum LED would provide health benefits ✌️✌️

This is an odd question but I think you're the right person to ask: Would it be useful to repurpose a small in-tank isolation box or breeder box with, say, java moss and a healthy population of infusoria/copepods/ostracods? My hunch is that if there's a strong breeding population established in the box, which the fish cannot access, then the colonies will rapidly increase in size while regularly having strays wandering outside of the box to be eaten by the fish. By doing this I think instead of the fish keeping the microfauna to a bare minimum due to predation and thus having a fairly low reproduction rate, instead you would have a really stable and thriving breeding colony that would produce a lot more food overall because it would multiply much quicker. Once I establish a fish tank I'm going to try this out because it would cost almost nothing. I suppose you could repurpose and old plastic container and it would literally cost nothing at all but that would probably be a little bit unsightly to leave sitting at the bottom of your tank. Anyway I'd love to hear your thoughts and if you think its a good idea I'd love to see you try it out.

It's definitely would be useful! That seems to be one of the way of culturing live food for fish in relatively small aquariums making them self-sustaining and self-feeding. I've been experimenting with different types of live food in this regards including those that you mentioned. Ostracods are great for feeding fish fry and small size adults. Those critters would prefer to swim where more light/food available for them - not necessary at the bottom of the tank. I see them more commonly gathered at the top closer to the window (light source) side of the tank. My favorite and tested by time are aquatic scuds and terrestrial springtails. Adult scuds survive in aquariums fish small fish. Though, it helps to boost their reproduction by adding more scuds or by making a place for them to breed without getting attacked by fish. The platform shown in this video is for culturing scuds and springtails 🙂You are on the right path! Keep it up!!

Could you please kindly explain what you feed the fish? I understood you feed them moss? And if so, thats all, or something else?

I feed fish 3 times a week with homemade flakes made of aquatic plants growing in the aquarium. And fish have live food (scuds) growing in the same aquariums. Also, fish feed on snail eggs (growing in the aquariums). Once a month I add more scuds in each aquarium to keep the scuds population growing. And I feed fish with Grindal worms, springtails and vinegar ells cultured in separate tanks. The 29 gallon tank showing in this video has land platform with moss - that is a place where I culture springtails and grindal worms exclusively for this aquarium. Land moss does not served as food in any significant amount for my fish. It's just a surface/medium for culturing springtails and aquatic scuds. Though, for more details about culturing aquatic scuds on this land platform I have to make a video explanation - this is still work in progress that I need more time to check how well it works. So far it works great!
