What an excellent point, "Stylists jump on bandwagons too!"
@FoAdunni8 ай бұрын
😅 Stylists are humans, some are great and some aren’t . As a content creator some stylists already have a disdain for creators so any critique of them is not taken well.

Yes @ the gel discussion!!! This is why I say I use "whatever gel" now. Is it slippery, does it hold, does it not irritate my skin, do I not gotta be in the bathroom an entire lifetime? Sold!

Hearing how some Botanical gels separate the curls more compared to some other gels that gather the curls more was interesting to me. I actually prefer my curls more gathered than very separated, so I would like to learn more about that. Also quick Question: Is there another Base besides “Gels” that would assist in the Health & Aesthetics of our curls? Like does it need to be “Gels” as a Base for the sake of Health & curls?

Great discussion ❤ thank you Rae for bringing up the stylists jumping on the uncle funkys I create hold bandwagon and your thoughts about the product and the process. I did seesomecurls for awhile but I never practiced it. I couldn’t get past the learning curve, the water ratios and temps. I felt like there was an easier way at least for me. I would agree, getting a shower mirror change the game for me. I thought I knew what I was doing but I had no idea until I was able to visually see my hair in the shower! 🚿

There is a learning curve with those products which is why they belong in the salon. I didn't have the patience for the learning curve. I stopped bothering with it and left wash and go styling to my stylist. And I chose to stick with twistouts for the time being. But I will admit that it probably is user error on my part. Right now I'm just not interested in putting forth the energy towards learning it. My hair is coarse but not as dense as yours and Rae's hair. I have stuck with my stylist's recommendations for shampoo and conditioner. I'm not one for experimenting though. I was a bit more skeptical of Innersense stylers working for me with twistouts, but surprisingly they've given me my best sets. And after doing my niece's hair with the products, I have a better idea of how to use them on my hair. But I'm still not interested in styling my hair in a wash and go. So I may not ever try them on myself. While I agree that stylists can follow trends, they are making calculated business decisions about product choice. By that I mean, they are choosing the most economical, high performing products that will serve the widest array of their clientele. There are probably other products that may perform well but not the best buy. They may not come in salon sizes; they may be hard to get, and they might only serve a small percentage of their clientele. I would argue those factors are what they are basing their decisions on more than trends.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on why stylists may be choosing certain products. That was an angle that I hadn't considered. We appreciate you watching and joining the discussion.

Thanks for sharing! And I agree so much with your last portion about stylists and trends. It was what I was communicating and I didn’t circle back because Rae said so many interesting things that I wanted to catch up on. I don’t think stylists running their business is always a deviant thing. It makes sense to select the products that are most convenient to you and benefit most of your clients best. What I’ve realized is a gap where I’m understanding the significance of sometimes KZbin or the online education some stylists provide. Once someone gets home their experience can be counter to what is most convenient to a stylist and her business. Take me for example I need to use fragrance free and in some areas less comedogenic products. Or some people may not have much hot water in their home. Some people may have many heads to style at home. Some people may find that styling their hair with the same products and techniques their stylist does in the shop, doing this at home regularly causes mechanical damage. In the salon a stylist is focusing on efficiency and they are standing over the hair with a broader view and dexterity. Then we as clients go home and mimic techniques that work best for possibly someone else standing over our hair and we are tearing that hair up. There is so much more to be said. ❤

@@FoAdunnithis is exactly the point of my second comment. There are significant struggles at home. With the current setup of natural hair stylists, they are not accessible for the troubleshooting in between appointments. Things are very different with a home setup. Also stylist results should be superior to ours particularly in the beginning stages. In the end I'm really just highlighting the change in the stylist-client relationship with natural hair. It's very different than before.

Using what stylists use at home...one thing I found odd with the natural hair stylist-client relationship culture is the idea of seldomly going to the salon. I understand becoming more familiar with our hair or learning how to style our children's hair at home. But I actually think it's a vulnerability in our practices. Expecting clients to grapple with their hair for months on end, especially early on just never made sense to me. If the hair that is coming into the salon is a bad as I hear stylists tend to say, to me it seems as if we should be under the care of a stylist more frequently before being "released" to manage on our own.
@Chromagens8 ай бұрын
Yeah this I agree with. But I think it's because of what they want from their business (low volume) and what other products they can offer (books, online training). I don't think it's sinister but just the way it is atm. In my area (outside the US) I am seeing some stylists that offer shorter and more frequent curly hair specific service tho. But it's rare.

Price can also be a factor. Some are charging $150 or more. I can't afford to do that every 2 weeks or every month.

@@Chromagens lower volume is something I thought about. It's more labor intensive for the stylist. I'd like to see a better system for troubleshooting though. My saving grace was that I went monthly for gray root touch ups. I know I would've been so lost. If nothing else psychologically my hair gave me the blues those first few months.

@@dunateo3506 I agree it can be more expensive. But I'd like to see a more reasonable and affordable path that includes troubleshooting support.
