Adding vinegar or baking soda will change the color of your dies depending on the PH. Your red cabbage will become pink if you add vinegar. (I think)! Love the ideas!

This was so well-presented! I took screen shots of all your charts. Adding 1 tsp. table salt and 1 tsp. white vinegar per cup of ink will help preserve it and keep it from fading. The ink bottles and any projects should be kept out of sunlight. As one author puts it, natural inks are alive and they will change over time. We should embrace that change if we we want to use these on covers where they will inevitably fade.

I want a sequel! Being obsessed with organizers I’d love to see production of a journal (catalogue) or a decorated box for keeping these labeled swatches & solution recipes. And an organizer for freezer (with labeled ice cube trays perhaps). I loved it all. And the lace imprints, wow such a multitasking going on here. Straining through cheese cloth will produce a bonus coloured piece for projects as well. How cool!

Absolutely love the red Berry tea! I made some yesterday and used a soft large head art brush and achieved the most amazing patterns. You have to be quick applying it but if you do it slowly you get brilliant effects especially if you go back over it. I made a tartan type design and a swirl and they look brilliant!

Love this, didn't watch because I assumed this was about making inks from purchased powders, natural dyeing is more accurate. My most successful dye was the pulp I had remaining after making grape juice. Layered papers with water and pulp and let them dry. The paper is crumpled and a glorious purple (red/black grapes) then I composted the pulp and made grape jelly with the juice. I have sprinkled turmeric on wet paper and used tea bags with turmeric too. Will have to try your other recipes.

I tried the onion skins, dandelion flowers and leaves, butterfly flowers, coffee, and an assortment of black and herbal teas. I love the way the onion skins come out. Since I don't have access to the multitude of onion skins I would need, I decided to try to mimic the colors with watercolor paints. It worked beautifully. Thanks for your great ideas.

I get onion skins from the grocery store. Make friends with your local store’s produce person and they will let you gather the skins from the onion display! Also less than beautiful and older veggies like beets, red cabbage etc.

I love drinking turmeric and ginger tea. When I drink it I save the tea bags and use them in my art journal, or I sometimes make extra tea and use that to stain my papers - it looks really beautiful with coffee stains and I even use the Tim Holtz spray stains (my favourite is aged mahogany); it’s just so beautiful *chefs kiss*. I also really enjoy drinking rose hip and hibiscus tea. It’s a really pretty dark pink colour but when it dries, it becomes a really gorgeous pale violet colour. I’ve been thinking about trying berries, beets, spinach. Nicola Brown has a KZbin channel about eco dying worth checking into if that’s of interest to anyone.

I love this. So much fun experimenting with natural & surprising colours. Lots of red/ purple fruits & vegetables will make a solution that will act like a universal indicator, and go either pinkish or bluish, depending on the acidic or alkaline qualities they're exposed to.

Hi Natasa. The anthocyanins in the red cabbage and cranberries are what produces the bluish tones. When I ecoprint with cotinus and other reddish leaves, they will also print blue/purple. Science is amazing- even in art.

Yellow is my favorite color. I'm so going to try the Turmeric, Coffee and Tea. The little swatch packets at the end are so cool. I made this kind of stuff years ago after inspiration from wool dying videos. There are sooooo many fantastic things to use for dying and boiling helps with making the dye last longer and also more pigment coming out of the plants or what you use for the dye. And there are sooo much fun! Also, don't forget soot from campfires or if you have a fireplace. then you can use it like you can use things like eyeshadow and so on and put it on with a makeup sponge or something. So many fun things to use! :)

Tip for preservation from the Old Masters of art - add 3 drops of lavender oil to the mixture. Lavender is a natural preservative. The Old Masters used a drop of lavender oil to help keep oil paints soft longer, and there is a specific purified oil called Oil of Spike Lavender for that purpose. I used regular lavender essential oil. The amount is so small that it doesn't affect the paper. I like the freezing idea as well.
