This is the hardest part about content creation I feel. What is he doing playing Mox Diamond in that deck though? So, so bad. Then he even got rightly overly punished by that white three drop game two. At first I said ty because the Mox was in the sideboard, then it showed up in the deck, and he lost, and I was glad. It's not an early pick after Natural Order first pick either. Imo the only consideration to take it there is if it is a good card to cut in a non-league draft, but still probably not. It's a glorified Lotus Petal. Maybe after after Wrenn and Six or another recursion card. But the draft was already going to be busy picking up early green creatures and big targets for NO. Edit: second deck was great though for sure

I forget who said it but there's a quote "the first skill acquired by any pro player is the ability to take a loss". I think a pretty common quality in succesful tournament players - in basically any game - is that those guys really don't go on tilt easily. Not to belittle LSV's patience - it's quite amazing - but a pro player not being able to shake off stuff like that on the regular, in an RNG based game, would be a recipe for disaster.

@@grin_of_grimmsnarl1333 Fair enough. I’d argue combo decks are much less powerful in the mtgo cube and from a meta perspective combo decks aren’t as good as they once were. My feeling is Six would have been a better pickup than breach. Breach just makes your deck more inconsistent and you can already cast your 7s pretty easily, you don't need a 2-mana discount at the cost of a card that badly IMO given it also stretches the mana. Six is just an awesome thing to put out there on turn 2 after an elf AND you have time walk in your deck which is quite the combo.
@Sidnv2 ай бұрын
I think LSV underrates Six. It's a really fantastic card. It's also great in a time walk deck because it lets you rebuy the cards that rebuy time walk. Breach is better with time walk but the mana wasn't really there imo.
@brianh58442 ай бұрын
@@Sidnv Ah, tbh I was overrating it a bit. Forgot about the "permanent" part of non-land cards, but yeah, when you have tamiyo in your deck then it's still a way to recur time walk. But let's just pretend that's what I meant this whole time...

With the 3 fatties that he had and the free red sources he had to go with it? No chance. You had outs game 1. As others pointed out in the comments, you could crack canopy hoping to hit natural order for Atraxa. Assuming no interaction from your opponent, you're attacked with Otharri and 6 rebels, kill Otharri with Atraxa, take 12-7=5 and go to 3. Then next turn you could possibly get something going, or even win with Tamiyo double time walk. Or the complete nuts would be sac canopy draw time walk, cast time walk + paradise druid. Then next turn if you draw natural order and hit Tamiyo off Atraxa, you have exactly enough mana for Natural Order + Tamiyo + replay time walk, which probably wins you the game.

I wonder if LSV's drafting strategy of valuing flexibility (for example, fetch lands) is actually suboptimal in this type of winner takes all format. Since it only matters if you sweep, and going 3-1 is essentially the same as going 4-0, the odds should bias towards trying to spike the most broken deck possible and taking big risks, rather than taking "good" picks and ensuring the deck is playable. Or stated mathematically, in 5 drafts, you may be better off drafting 1 top 1% deck + 4 bottom 10% percent decks rather than 5 70th percentile decks.

If anyone reading this has control over how cube worlds is done, consider changing the way the qualifiers are done next year. I agree with another commenter while the pursuit is admirable because of the way they've set up the qualifier it isn't built to find the "best" players; just the luckiest. Having to go 6-0 and then 3-0 is highly contingent on getting power (multiple if possible)

I'm sure LSV understands the improbability of making it to the final 8 in any format, let alone Vintage Cube. That said, it does feel like such bad beats when things like this happen. I would love to see the decklists of the 13-0 decks that make it to the finals. I am almost certain you will see almost exclusively NutDraw.Dec beyond round one. A "fair" deck with a solid game plan just isn't going to cut it against other undefeated decks with these insane Power 9-enabled game enders. That being said, I like that LSV seems to be drafting towards this. If you're going to need to run hot anyways, might as well make your gameplan some version Natural Order, Flash, Channel, Hullbreecher Wheel, Tinker, etc.
