The flamingo habitat in the Albanian nature reserve of the Narta Lagoon is under threat. An international airport is to be built here to boost tourism. But it will come at the expense of one of Europe's last untouched natural paradises.
A large international airport is to be built in the immediate vicinity of one of Europe's first wild river national parks, in Albania. According to the Albanian government, it will bring tourists to the country and create jobs.
But building an airport in the middle of this large, untouched wetland would destroy one of the last natural paradises in Europe, warns Zydjon Vorpsi, who works for an Albanian environmental protection organization. He’s particularly concerned about the many rare bird species that live and breed in the Narta Lagoon area, which he regularly counts and catalogs. Whether rare pelicans, flamingos or endangered species such as the wood sandpiper or the curlew - they would all be threatened by the project.
Although the Narta Lagoon enjoys national and international conservation status, construction is already underway. Zydjon Vorpsi and the PPNEA (Protection and Preservation of Natural Environment in Albania) initiative argue that the airport project in the Vjosa-Narta protected area violates Albania's own laws and also breaches international agreements on the protection of biodiversity, ratified by the country itself. They have filed a lawsuit against the project and are supported by foreign nature conservation organizations. Can they still stop the construction? It's a race against time. The airport is scheduled to be finished by 2025.

I have visited Narta Lagoon on a birdwatching trip in Albania in 2018. It is a special place for birds and biodiversity. I am shocked to see the government of Albania going ahead with this unsustainable project. Albania should be promoting it's country as an eco-tourism destination. Don't let low cost airlines destroy your country with trash tourism.

Eco-tourism is a destination in Africa, where people spend 2 euros a day and are satisfied. We cannot act as an African country among rich countries. it is difficult to remain undeveloped in Europe because the income are low, and people will leave the country due to lack of income...We have to find a balance 🙂

The only "insanity" is your ill informed comment. By saying "Destroying nature" to a country with only 1 airport, located nowhere near the heart of its tourism is "insane" and is done so by design by Albania's competition. This extreme viewpoint, blindly supported by environmentalists like yourself, demonstrates a profound disconnect with reality. It seems you'd rather play the hero in a cape than bother to conduct basic research.

I am fortunate enough to have traveled to nearly thirty countries, with Albania being one of them. Unfortunately many people look down on Albania as they have some misconceptions about it. I blame this mostly on ignorance as they have not done the research and/or traveled there themselves. Albania is a beautiful country with mountains that rival the Alps and among the best beaches in the Mediterranean. Albania is also full of history, it has a unique language and culture, and its people seemed very welcoming and friendly to tourists. You can see that the country is making a big push to increase tourism revenue by upgrading infrastructure all around the country. This comes at a cost though. I don’t think it’s fair for outsiders to decide what is best for this country as they don’t live there. They also are most likely in a better financial situation than most Albanians, so it’s almost not right to stop economic process which can ultimately help the country and its citizens. Albanias tourism will rival Croatias at some point in the future.

Each city in Albania have castle most of them even small city’s with small castles wich Means that the place is full of history and there is a lot of to explore we need the third gate for tourist . We do have national parks and the Europe last wild river we can’t keep everything wild then we become a jungle but not destroy the nature in the way wich it will not be suitable for species wich we lucky to have. Other countries has done worst then us we have to develop as a country as we doing but not damaging the surroundings as we doing. Yes. But I think at these crazy times where everywhere is being constructed knowing that once destroyed nature doesn't come back, our priority should be conservation of the flora and fauna habitat. Our Albania is beautiful, beautiful because of the nature and people, not because of the streets and buildings. ❤

Or perhaps you are here lobbying for our next dour neighbours trying to eliminate competitions. This is Albania's second airport, this is our livelihood, ticket out of a $200/month paycheck. @kekp3791
@kekp3791 Ай бұрын
@@arbersadikaj3423 your argument derives from a very limited perspective without taking into account other economic and political aspects. You think that an airport will increase the salaries from € 200/month to up as it's a cyclical system that happens organically in a democratic country with high transparency and fair legal framework. If the salaries in Albania are still low try to find the reasons while in many cities people live in luxurious life. If your dream would have become a reality, it means that this would have already happened. But in one of the most corrupted government, with strong affiliates with illegal trafficking and oligarchs, don't expect any improvements in such aspect even after this airport is functional. Saying this, learn to be critical towards the people who takes decisions in your name without considering you. "Crazy times" refers to a more broad perspective related to involvement of external powers that influence Albania, and not only, through politics. It mostly comes from USA, a country that is led around money, and not humanity, values, and environments. In order to understand this you will require a lot of time, efforts, research and analysis, which means years, and then we can discuss on this topic. Conclusion: the airport should have been constructed in a field considering strongly the environmental impact, flora and fauna preservation, and natural resources, cause the economic growth will happen anywhere where it will be located. By an advicer of business sustainability, from Albania. And yes, I have consulted companies from China and India too. They are strongly aware to protect their environment through strategic development and investments. (finally)

Extremes point of view are never good. Yes, the airport is built very close to the lagoon and should have been build > 10 km more in the North to fully protect the birds. the Location is a MISTAKE of Government. On the other side the other options had more technical and financial concerns to build and the airport was risking not to build at all. The last important thing is that between the lagoon and the airport is a small buffer zone 3-4 km with ponds for productions of sea salt. While I doubt that the buffer zone will be enough for birds protection, I still have some hope that the birds will remain.

Yes it is a 3.2km airport line which makes flight directly with great cities in othet continents. We have 4 lagoons and Narta is not the most important one to protect. I know the problem and I wished for a better place to build it, but anyways tourism is so important to Albania nowadays

Albania is under an authoritarian dictator Edi Rama. He sees Albania as his own property. His behaviour is similar to the African dictator Idi Amin Dada Oumee or short Idi Amin. He makes jokes like the African dictator Idi Amin and also he thinks he is a world leader. In Albania there are no free elections. Please pray for Albania and help Albania.

Very poor presentation from DW. ALBANIA still have over 15 years moratorium of hunting to help the birds species. And the huge problem is EU member states hunters that will shot at anything when they come for hunting in Albania. Is not a joke they did shoot farm animals many times. Of course the country don’t have capacity like Germany or UK or Holland that’s why did put hunting ban. EU spends billions on preservation for birds in Cyprus, Italy, Greece, or Spain and guess what, they killed them all. And will eat everything. Well they are EU members so they can do what they want, but you have to save the flamingos😂

Thank you for bringing this issue unfortunately Albanian’s government is in the most critical time as the prime minister is doing everything he wants, looking at the country as his property. Please look into Sazan Island which was protected from building has just been allowed by government to be build from Donald’s Trump son in law and a russian oligarch connected with an ex FBI agent who was just arrested because of corruption connected with Albanian Prime Minister.

For all those nature geniuses who seem to know everything, it’s easy to judge from your perspective but as a Albanian who grew up there and has seen how much tourism and investments in our city have improved development and employment that airport is essential in helping the city and its people while also creating new job opportunities and it will help the surrounding communities attract more investment therefore improving a lot of people’s life’s so if it means peoples life will change for the better then I’m afraid the airport should continue as it is. Also I don’t understand why the EU countries are being mentioned because I can name several case like this in EU countries
