Hi Holly, awesome info about tackling those pests in your new Live👍. Do you know whether Sweet Potoatoes are privy to any particular Pest, as l have some going in pots 4mths ago & curious to know what’s happening underground? Also you have mentioned previously that you tend to leave your tubers inground so as to not disturb tree roots nearby & harvest the leaves instead to consume. It’s Autumn here & we’re getting a lot more rainfall, so my other question about these plants is do they have a tendency to rot under these conditions? Cheers Sofia

Hi Sofia, grasshoppers eat the leaves and snails but that doesn’t bother them much. Rats can find the roots as they tend to rise to the surface when they are ready and can then be vulnerable to attack. We have very Sandy dry soils here so I don’t have that problem. They would feed my plants if anything. Maybe harvest what you can. They often are quite shallow when ready 💚

Also they may not have had long enough to grow just yet..as usually would plant in Spring and harvest lasts autumn / winter. But you definitely will next season 🌱

@@SustainableHolly Thank you for your reply. I am going to salvage the vines & regrow them just like you’ve shown us & then pull up the tubers and see what’s happening in there. I hope there’s not been any sneaky ratties in there! 🐀🌱🌈 I look forward to your next content. Have a good day 😀

Last year I read that spreading sand around the bottom of your brassicas, and trimming off any leaves that touch the ground/edge of the pot/bed they're in will deter some of the bugs that eat them. So I started doing that and didn't have any issues with bugs eating them, even grew my first successful cauliflowers!

Thanks for sharing Mel! I haven’t heard the sand idea before so that’s interesting. But definitely agree with the trimming as it just acts as a ladder to the pests and makes it easy for them 🌱🐌 so happy you got some Cauliflowers!!

@@SustainableHolly yeah the sand was to deter the slugs & snails, since it's hard for them to crawl on it.

I wanted to be here for the live .. its 4 AM our time, which is fine - I wake up early, but I 'overslept' a bit 🙄 Great presentation of natural pest control methods - but don't neglect the birds! We use ducks for slug and snail control, weeding (and they love woodlice aka slaters, too) .. but for most of the garden, the work is done by the wild bird population, boosted with a little encouragement from feeders and surface water - I've put up houses, but they still prefer nesting in the trees and thickets .. although duck feathers seem to be a popular nesting material.

Thank you for watching! Absolutely they are another great layer to add! I would love some ducks but I don’t have the ideal property for them.

Hey Holly! Something I just learned in my food forest garden is to leave the spider webs alone. They are doing a great job of keeping my grasshopper population in balance. Cheers!

Thanks Craig! Yes I don’t mess with the spiders 🕷️ just avoid 🤣

Lots of great tips and advice yet again thx Holly😊👍🏼. I have most of the beneficial bugs on your lists and it’s fun trying to spot them when I go into the garden. There’s 3 baby dragonflies that follow me around in the garden too so they’ve become like my pets…it’s so cute 🐝🪱🦋🐛🐌🐞🦎🪲🐸🦜

Hi Holly, missed the live show today, enjoyed watching the playback. Great advice for natural alternatives. Ive used egg shells before for slugs and also went out and removed them daily. Both heavily reduced my issue. Im now tackling the cabbage moth by using netting, so far so good. Ive just planted a heap of edible flower seeds inspired by you. looking forward to seeing them grow.

Tips for earwigs? Or are they good?
@SustainableHolly Жыл бұрын
Good and bad so would need to maintain a balance. They can eat aphids but also plant roots. Increasing biodiversity and having little lizards and birds will help keep them in check .
