Who’s tired of drums sounding like drum machines? Who’s not? Opinions please!

Modern metal in all of this generic crap started in the early 2000s with a hoard of just cheesy metal core bands, overdone recordings and now it has gotten so out of control even bands with drummers sound like they have fake drums. Sometimes it is drum machine the over processing the overly done amount of triggers, the tempo mapping all of this garbage that takes the complete soul out of metal music, it's gotten super corny and super generic. You wanna look for an incredible amazing album with supernatural drums that absolutely pummels you still to this day look no further than chaos. A.D.

More tiring than the overprocessed drum sounds is the trend of these insanely fast and complicated drum parts. The problem is that you have to be a cyborg under amphetamines to play the simplest part of the chorus... and this ain't vibing in live concerts!

Machine drums suck. Things went bad around 2000 when triggers and digital recording became affordable. As a consequence bands since focus on production, and not on writing good songs with strong groove/vibe/melody. The "music" got lost in the productional tricks. Everything quantized, triggers, limiters, eqd into oblivion. A lack of flow from punching in 100x in one chorus, and every 4seconds there is a drumfill or rythm change. I find myself listening to things like Atheist or Darkthrone demoes, 80s thrash, Creedence Clearwater Revival/Journey/Yes/Kansas/Alan Parson/FleetwoodMac etc., to remember how real music sounds when it is played well. How many Painkillers/Run to the Hillses/God of Emptinesses/Child in Timeses/Black Hole Suns have been written since 2000? Gojira, Devin Townsend, and Ghost are the few I can come up with. The real vibe seems to get lost when overanalyzed I think working to a grid/click is a major cause 🤔. A third step towards our current state of misery is that digital/ ITBox mixing allows people to copycat other bands productions, leading people to think theres a shortcut template to "succes", effectively gentrifying music/metal. StarbucksCore. McMetal. Character and energy, including non-perfections, are a core-value of real creativity.

Honestly i like the organic room sound of the drum sound on the album, but i have some issues with the snare and Toms they sound very cutoff and heavely compressed. Ofcourse if you listened to the original recordings from 1993 there are a lot of differences but personally i would try to make it more sound like the old fashionable version of ICON. 🤘🤘🔥🔥

Honestly, I just realized that it kills my interest in mixing these days actually.. Is it me or is everyone trying to achieve a freaking over-exaggerated over-the-top, none human drums sound like... I get it in a certain genre.... but still can we all remember how drums sound in a room... The snare is not supposed to be a shotgun every hit haha

Absolutey love more organic drum sounds. Modern drums always sound sterile and overproduced. The best drum sound in my opinion is on Refused’s The Shape Of Punk To Come; it’s unreal how well it sounds across all systems I listen to it on with the snare and toms being the standouts. The only issue I have is how the kick gets a bit lost in the mix, but you still feel it

Hey Kristian! I'm from Porto and actually met you there by occasion at that time, and showed you and Adam my studio, which was still under construction at the time. I had the pleasure of working with Gomez once. I did guitar/bass tracking for a project he was working on for a Brazilian band. While I was not present at the drum sessions, those drum tracks were probably the best raw tracks I've listened to! They sounded unreal, almost like samples, in a good way! Cheers!

DUDE!!!! Jaime Gomez Arellano!!! I love his mixes soooo much. I'm a Paradise Lost fan since the early days and listened to them even as a kid who did not understand a single word english, because my brother had some of their records. To me it's absolute amazing how he took that band to the next level with his mixing and production. Again, I'm a long time fan, but to me they never sounded better than today.

Totally like organic drums because overproduced, sample induced drums really makes my ears numb. In this case I thought that bass drum might have been a little too squashed but in the end it still sounded pretty nice. :D New Nile album has pretty organic drum sounds and you can actually hear every now and then when some cymbals bleed to snare track. It's not bad and even if I'm not a pro mixer I can definitely tell when cymbals bleed to snare or tom mics. :D That Nile album was pretty fresh with its soundscape.

@@KohleAudioKult Billy Anderson has worked on some legendary albums in the doom space, would be an interesting interview. Funeral doom would be an interesting thing to look at being mixed, with suffocating reverb being such a huge part of the sound. In general doom mixes just sound so different than other metal subgenres to my ears so I'd like to see more discussion and techniques out there.

I didn't get about the routing... the compressor on the room micrs, where does it go... the blackbox on which tracks and where does it go... Is that vid on youtube from the The Paradise Lost Mixing Ritual?
@constantinranis4 ай бұрын
These are snapshots, I think he has 2 parallel compression channels , one with only kick snare and toms kith slower attack and fast release, and one parallel channel with black box and compression with fast attack and fast release with kick snare toms and rooms , overheads go straight to the mixbus
@scorestorm4 ай бұрын
@@constantinranis I understand that it is parallel, but where does the sound from the parallel go? I saw two options: 1 - in drumbus>mixbus, 2 - straight to mixbus
