Adem Fehmi is a Dog Trainer and Behaviourist working in Hertfordshire. In this video, he demonstrates how to teach your dog a drop or 'emergency stop'. He explains the relevance of this in a gundog context but also it's relevance to everyday life.
Sometimes we don't want our dog to come back to us immediately, sometimes it is more important that they just stop what they're doing wherever they are.
One of the key aspects of giving an instruction at a distance is the use of hand signals and whistles and Adem shows how we can incorporate these into the training process.

This is just what I was looking for. Lots of exercises to practise and they are progressive too. Short video but packed with exactly the info I needed.

It's the best way and explanation in KZbin to train your dog the immediately stop with hand sign and whistle. Many thanks for sharing your experience with us and your work for making this video.

Hand signals and whistles are for cyclists. Dogs are far too intelligent to need them. Sadly, some humans might need them too. I've been training field dogs for a long time. Don't own a whistle. ...never will. Blasted things invade the very essence of being in our wonderous outdoors. Toot toot...toot toot....tooooot...toot toot...tooooot! Good gracious....its 2021 people! If I get a speeding ticket and come home unhappy, the 4-6 dogs here for training will likely skulk away, even if I try to greet them with a cheerful voice. If dogs are that "intuitive", who are the hand signals and whistles for? Obviously, NOT the dogs....

@@shug2795 We thanks God that we have people like you on this world, who exactly know what each one is making right or wrong. I suppose that you don't own a car, a television, or a mobile phone making any noise. Conclusion: Nobody is interisting in your opinion, or easier, please make a video of your own at your head points. We are waiting for it.....

I would like to see this in the list basic commands! I have been working with dogs professionally for over 15 years and have never heard of this command before today!

It really is a good cue to teach a dog, that's why I recommend that people I know whistle train their dog even if they aren't working because it gives you more control. It helps massively when your dog is at the other side of the field and about to jump over a barbed wire fence!

When you 1st leave the dog, you need to step round in front and ever so slowly increase distance from there. If the dog doesn't already understand the wait/stay, they're going to get up and follow. Distance and duration needs to be built very slowly.

I’ve got two cockers coming in a month. Question: is it better to train them separately with exactly the same commands but with their names added to the command?

Typical of too many videos is a dog that ALREADY knows the requests. We need to see what to do when a dog does NOT do as expected. Thank you.

If the dog didn't know the commands, he wouldn't be able to demonstrate the steps of how to teach it.

How do you make them sit when they are far away? They don't have a problem sitting and staying put while you walk away. Usually when you tell them to sit when they are down range they come to you and then sit. Can't seem to figure that one out, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I've watched other videos and had success myself with the fake throw technique. Pretend to throw dummy or ball so that the dog turns and starts to run and then blow stop whistle. The dog will turn to look and stop due to realising that the dummy has not been thrown. Ask for sit if necessary and then throw dummy as reward. My pup learnt stop this way and will now reliably sit at range. Steadiness teaching next.

He emphasised walking to and rewarding the dog, rather than calling it to you after success. I think that is important. He also emphasised getting a good solid stay out of the dog as a prerequisite for anything.

do you really need to blow the whistle that hard at close range when the dog's ears are extremely sensitive? i love your videos, thanks for the clear instructions!

For a gun dog, you'll ultimately be shooting while it's nearby. Gunshots are definitely louder than whistles

@@yasseenmoussalli9581 tru but shouldn't you save a loud whistle for when they're farther away or not getting the picture? I hardly raise my voice to a dog because if there's an emergency that requires yelling, I want him to be shocked by the tone change and stop. I hear ya though
