This dudes a genius. Not only is he training the dog, he’s training his viewers on how to do these exercises on their own. He’s using explanation of what he wants to do, reasoning in why he is doing it, then constantly repeats what we need to do to try these exercises at home properly. He’s a great teacher for dogs and humans as well. Awesome stuff 👍🏼

I’m not a professional trainer but I’ve always taught all my dogs to recall to a marine whistle. This is a whistle attached to life jackets and can be heard for miles over a flat terrain like water and can be heard by dogs from great distances even in city like terrain. I use liverwurst as the reward for the recall to the whistle. To me having a way to recall a dog might wonder off to a distance beyond what our voices can travel is possibly lifesaving. Great video! ... this is just sad to read , as this is one of the worse recall videos Ive ever actually seen. To each its own, but if you couldnt see the issues in this you shouldnt be training dogs either. The whole point of a GOOD RECALL is for off leash, so why teach the dog on a leash?? If verbal is not enough, minimal e collar usage is the answer but this dog was coming on the verbal command but when its on a leash it will act different then off so its not even fair to train the dog in this manner, let it off the leash with all the energy and then lets see what happens. Usually his videos are good but this was bad bad.
@margoravenspire2604 Жыл бұрын
@yummybong148 he said at 2:12 he will eventually train the dog off the leash AFTER he understands the whistle recall perfectly. Why should he let the dog off the leash when he doesn't know yet if the dog will run off or stay close? Seems safer to train with a long slip lead and whistle as the first step-- especially for a dog that gets overly excited by other animals or people nearby and might just take off
@yummybong148 Жыл бұрын
@@margoravenspire2604 ... you can literally work on recall within your house or a fenced yard and progress from there. You do realize this guy has a facility right so its a controlled environment, so what are you on about cause you clearly didnt read my whole message or youd realize alot of what was stated had reasons with better options takling about this guys comment and not the video itself. I adopted a dog the other day, one who'd been more or less a stray a lot of her life - in a month, she's gone from being rescued with her mate to having a litter, mothering the pups and weaning them, then being the last one waiting to be adopted. She's been through a lot, and didn't even know what a dog toy was before her initial rescue. Needless to say, this girl doesn't have an idea about training. Lessons like these are really going to come in handy!

I really appreciate your having incorporated a whistle into the recall. I have a 1 year old husky/Belgian malinois cross. She is very boisterous and loves to run. We spend our winters at our off grid log cabin in the Yukon. This is her first time at the cabin with us and I have been working on her recall. I walk the dogs daily on our lake (frozen now and with skidoo walking paths tracked out for us). Her recall has been pretty good, but as the snow absorbs noise, my voice recalls sometimes go unnoticed. I have a whistle and have wondered if I could bring that in to her recall training. This explained it perfectly! I can't wait to get her out on the lake and start bringing this in to her training. Just have to wait for it to warm up a bit as we are down to -28C today! Brr! Thanks so much, Will!

We speak 3 languages at home and use a recall phase in the language that is less used inside the house and a phrase that won't come up in conversation or any other time. We use french "au pied" (to the foot) for recall or anytime the dog is getting too far ahead off leash or on leash and I want him to reposition back into heal (like glued to the side of my leg/foot which is very important when crossing the street or crosswalk or when off leash in my neighborhood because of so many scooters/motorcycles using the sidewalk). As english speaker I really love the simplicity of "au pied" but the whistle is a great option too.

I've been working with her leash training and various tricks like sit, lay down, shake, and roll over. She is a fast learner. Maybe in a month or so, I'll get a much longer leash and start the recall training. I dropped her lead one day and she took off running as fast as she could, thankfully in circles near me. But when I called her and sat down, she came back to me and was very happy to see me. I praised her but unfortunately didn't have any treats. This video is very helpful. Thank you.

@hayleymccartney93562 жыл бұрын
Explaining it to myself here- Start the process of moving recall onto a wistle to guarantee 100% success. Pip the whistle 2 times to determine recall. Start with concept of coming to me = reward and praise and claps. Must be on long leash so that if he ignores you encourage with a tug and still reward all three things. First step is to shout “come” and as soon as he comes back reward. It needs to be instant and heavily reward so that he wants to come to you and sees it as a fun experience. Vocal inflection, physical touch and treat. Must do this for around 10 minutes just to charge marker. Just showing that coming to you means greatness and reward. This Is a long process. 1. Shout come with long leash on. Repeat to drill into head for 15 minutes in first session. Next part is transitioning it over to a whistle once he knows coming to you is a great thing. Make sure you have lots of space. When he’s coming to you pip the whistle TWO times to indicate that means recall. So whistle while he’s coming to you and reward like normal. In his mind he will associate two pips with coming back to you. You need to do this for awhile so he begins to associate the pip pip with coming back. Very important to give great praise. 2. Say “come” and when they are on there way pip the whistle twice. Repeat for awhile with a lot of praise. Let the dog wonder and shout “come” and just pip the whistle. Remember that if he isn’t coming automatically pull a little to encourage him to come. Once this is drilled ans you think your ready try just pip the whistle. If he comes back make sure you make a huge deal out of it. This is a long process and make sure set your dog up for success so don’t try other steps until your positive your dog understands the first step of coming to you when shouting come= rewards then after 20 minutes including whistle into it for awhile as-well. Recall is so important 🐶. Give really high value when he has a break through with a certain step. Make sure you do this for a while before including distractions.

I suspect it's ones that average human hearing can't detect so they've no idea how excruciatingly painful they are to those of us who can hear them (presumably including the poor dog). Such a lovely gentle training process too. Real joy to see!

Excellent video. Can't wait to try it out with my Sprollie who I feel so anxious about letting off the lead in the park (which makes me feel so guilty cause I can see he's dying too go explore but I just can't trust him to come back). I wonder if you could cover barking next? As my dog barks as soon as anyone goes past the window or the hall in my building past my door.

is there a part 2 for the off leash practice? my dog does this perfectly on a leash but once she's off the leash she doesn't care at all lol

@aren aren I disagree with you. He talks about the high standard 4:08. Especially 4:58. Establish this standard and do not relax the standard just because you are working off leash. More reps on lead at the high standard. If he has learned that the standard is different off lead than on lead, it is because you taught him that is the case. Review what you have done to teach this unwanted dual standard. You should continue on lead until progressing to high standard success 100% in the most challenging, distracting situations. Then, off lead, go back to zero distractions, close distance, highest value rewards in order to ensure success at the same high standard of full engagement, immediate response, driven effort. Build from there without compromising your standard. When the lead comes off, don't put it into storage.

@@TPinesGold hi I think the breed he is using is one of the easiest to try this, but try it with a patterdale terrier which is what I have, they are so stubborn its untro, but hopefully as he gets older he might come on call, but I have been told you cannot ever let a patterdale of the lead... any help will be appreciated....

@@andwelovearpsychopat7820 you have to train the dog in front of you ... which is a way of saying that every dog is unique in its strengths, weaknesses and needs for the structure and the nature of the lesson. The same dog's needs may change from one lesson to the next; from one moment to the next. Our job as trainers is to get better at recognizing the need at any moment and get better at presenting the right lesson for that moment. Working breeds tend to have strengths (or weaknesses) suited to the nature of their job/purpose. Try to use your dog's strengths (strongly bred instincts) to your advantage rather than focusing on it as an obstacle or weakness. Your dog's stubbornness is tenacity, persistence, focus and drive. It comes down to whether those qualities are directed and invested in a behavior you want versus a behavior you do not want. The principles presented in the video still apply. Maybe you need to adjust the presentation and or the motivation. The high value reward might utilize prey drive instead of food. A small toy or a tug toy? Learn how to teach and play tug the correct way that incorporates the proper balance of strike, tug and out/release. Emphasize the tug play to be 100% engaging in the chase and strike of the toy. Put this tug game on a cue so that it begins only upon your invitation. Soon you will have your dog following you around, begging you to begin the tug game. Play this up ... in other words, let his begging build a bit before inviting him to begin the tug game. Act like you are trying to get away from him while he is begging. Now he is chasing you. Add a sit/stay so you can put some distance between you before you cue the invite to release him to sprint to you to begin the tug game. Overlay this activity into the principles presented in this video and now you have something stronger than your dog's "stubbornness".

@@andwelovearpsychopat7820 Thanks for that insight!! What have you tried so far???? Diitto my Siberian Husky is.. another breed that you're warned to "never let them off the leash" even though they need an hour+ high-speed running everyday. Plus, my husky puppy digs up sprinkler lines the moment she's out of line-of-sight. Every "e-collar" or "active dog" trainer in my areas seems backlogged w/ the Covid puppy surge. Tried whistle training. Kinda works. Don't trust for trail. Especially since most dog owners here unable/unwilling to recall their dogs... hence trail mayhem + injuries. Next trying Fenrir's technique, using a "bungee" dog leash for the long lead.

Just need to get our 3 year old GSP walking to heal and recall as good as this now. Certainly got my hands full and keeping me busy but amazing to see the improvement in both our dogs. Dear Will, I stumbled upon your KZbin Channel several days ago, in particular this one. I watched it fully a couple of times and then set about implementing your training with my chocolate puppy Labrador retriever. What a difference, in just these few days of practicing your techniques. The results are phenomenal and my dog is happier. Of course, I need to keep up the repetition through working with my dog 👍🏻 However, I’m so grateful for your channel and all that you share with us “dog owners”, to help us, help our dogs be great, obedient and happy companions. Thank you Will 😁

We have a rescue Lurcher, she is a wonderful dog, she does agility, walks great on lead and her recall is pretty good both with her name and a whistle but being a lurcher she does get the zoomies and when off lead and recalled with the whistle it excites her so much it sends her running in 60 foot circles around me for about 2 mins until she runs out of steam and no amount of whistle blowing will stop her. I also worry that being a Lurcher and picked up as a stray (used for coursing we think) she will chase anything that moves, she has never done it but if a rabbit or squirrel runs out in the distance will she stop ?

So, here's a question that might seem dumb. How long of a lead do you think is a good length for this sort of training? Is it dependant on the size of dog or temperament of dog? It looks like you're using about 15 feet (4.5 meters) but that's just me guessing.

My lab was the same, now walks on a flat collar. When they pull, stop and change direction, can take some time but they will learn to take directions from you. If they don’t they don’t get to progress any further.

Are there safety concerns with a slip-style long line? I was told to only ever use a long line with a back-clip body harness
@pinkydibs3 жыл бұрын
Quite right Coral. Gundog handlers who know their stuff use them , useful for a quick slip over on a rescue or loose dog but not ideal to train companion dogs on with beginners knowledge.

Love how you emphasize the actual importance of the connection with the dog and the importance of the keeping them engaged and looking to you for guidance. In the other sandy video you mentioned how even they want the anxiety removed of leading the walk. It's those little things that show you know what you're talking about. It all begins with establishing good communication and then the behavior can be worked on easily.

Can I ask why the whistle is introduced when the dog is already responding to the command? Trying to get my dog better at recalls and found this so helpful but just wondered what the reason was. Tia
@Tubenuub3 жыл бұрын
The dog's has learned the command "come" in a way that makes him not always respond to it. He has accidentally learned that ignoring the command is an option. So using the whistle is a way to make it a "new" command, so he can learn it again from scratch. And using a whistle can be better for dogs who are easily distracted and have selective hearing, it's an unmistakable sound.

Talk about multitasking - teaching humans & training dogs simultaneously & making it look so effortless. Yeah introducing a shepherds whistle with my two Labs when they were pups was a game changer, means I can recall them at any time no matter how far away they are or how noisy the surroundings are. Am never without it.
