It's now December and the Hooded Mergansers arrived at the river. The Hooded Mergansers will stay around until the very early spring. The male has a white crest with black border while the female has a cinnamon hue.
If you ever wish to relax on a grey day, the Mergansers are particular in lifting the mood.
The females were busy hunting for fish while the males not once did they attempt to fish. The males are seen busy with their courtship. The courtship display of these tiny ducks is a lot of fun to watch. The courting male makes a deep, rolling frog sound. Its breeding plumage is very striking here as well.
The scattered fall leaves reflect in the water. The golden hue reflections now have turned redder at this time of the year when most of the leaves left hanging on trees are mostly of birch trees. The transition of colors in nature is truly mesmerizing. It's moments like these that remind us of the ever-changing beauty of nature. 🍂🍁
I'd love to share more.
Thank you,
Francesca

Notes:
The synchronized courtship dance of Hooded Mergansers is a fascinating and intricate display. These small, striking ducks are known for their elaborate mating rituals, which involve a series of coordinated movements and displays.
Key Elements of the Courtship Dance:
Head-Pumping: The male Hooded Merganser begins by pumping his head up and down, showing off his striking crest. This movement is designed to catch the female's attention and demonstrate his fitness.
Crest Display: The male raises and lowers his crest, creating a dramatic visual effect. The crest is a key feature in attracting a mate, as it highlights the male's vibrant plumage.
Synchronized Swimming: Both the male and female engage in synchronized swimming, moving in unison across the water. This coordinated movement helps strengthen their bond and demonstrates their compatibility.
Vocalizations: The courtship dance is often accompanied by a series of vocalizations, including soft coos and whistles from the male. These sounds add to the overall display and help communicate the male's intentions.
Wing Flapping: The male may also flap his wings and perform other dynamic movements to further impress the female. These actions showcase his strength and agility.
The courtship dance of Hooded Mergansers is not only a beautiful spectacle but also an important part of their mating process. It allows the birds to assess each other's fitness and compatibility, ensuring the best possible pairing for raising their young.
