Love that you have caught the "bug" (pun intended) of doing flys for wild trout. -- Many people don't "get it" that it is about the challenge of hand-holding an animal that is not easily fooled into reaching for artificial bait. -- Also...try a Tenkara Rod in the Smokys. The stream size and fish size are very conducive to success.

Very nice! I am in Cullowhee and I haven't caught many brookies other than stockers. I have only caught one, but I must need to go to higher elevation. I've been catching a lot of wild brown and rainbows recently

Thanks so much for watching! Wild browns and rainbows make for a great day too. It’s hard to beat the beautiful colors on wild fish. For native brookies, higher elevation helps, or finding a natural barrier such as a waterfall that the rainbows and browns can’t get above. Tight lines!

I fished the smokies last week, I make it a point to get there as often as I can. The fall season, don't even get me started, there's no other place I would rather be. Love the outdoor background chatter over music. Enjoyed watching. 👍

I tell you what, my wife, and fishing in The smoky mountains are the only thing keeping me going man. Its just something about being there, pulling a fish In the net whose bloodline is older than nearly everything on the earth. And sometimes, when they start dancing on top of the water, it looks as if there are flames dancing on the surface

Thanks so much for watching. I try to be super consistent with always wetting my hands before handling the fish. Sometimes it may not be in frame because I reach over to the side and dip my hand in the water, but the camera is focused on the net, fish, etc. I actually worry enough about this and want people to know that I’m trying to handle the fish safely, so sometimes you’ll even hear me say something aloud such as, “let’s wet our hands,” so that if it’s not obvious, or off frame, people hopefully still know that I’m doing it 😊. Hope this helps and I definitely want to be a good steward-these fish are special and we want them to be there for generations to come. Sorry if it wasn’t more obvious in this video. Edit: I watched back through this video and I see some of what you are talking about-the way I edited it cut out some of the time between netting and the release so it doesn’t show that I wet my hands before handling them and later in the video it is out of frame and quick enough it would be easy to miss- maybe I can show that better in the future.

I actually love my current backpack and chest pack setup. When I originally went this route, I thought I would mainly use it on day hikes into the Smoky Mountains or similar areas since it would allow me to carry enough gear, food, etc. for a full day. What I’ve found instead is that I use it almost exclusively no matter where I fish now. Having the larger backpack works perfect for me when filming so I can take extra gear, but I think I would still love it even if I were not filming. I also love that you can drop the backpack and just use the chest pack as more of a minimalistic setup. Thanks for watching!

Thank you! That reel is what is left of my very first fly fishing outfit from when I first started. Ross used to make a rod and reel outfit that was a great starting point when getting into the sport. I no longer have the rod, but the reel is called a Flystart and has been discontinued for some time. It is very simple-nothing fancy at all, but i have enjoyed using it on my 3wt rod when chasing smaller wild fish. Thanks for watching!
