WZFreakOnDrugs well said, allow me to rephrase; due to survival of the fittest this mutation of hanging has remained prominent because they are more likely survive, likely due to their resistance to wind.

I bet another the reason the cocoon has holes in like that, is a matter of economy. If their hanging like that has already put them out of the way of ants and such why waste time and energy making a solid cocoon, when you can make a very open weave like that much easier.

@@CharlieApples but think about how little money caterpillars make, this one probably is smarter for making an cocoon with holes as it saves on money they can use when they're a butterfly. I'm getting fed up with this thumb/subscription begging on KZbin. I find it lame and am inclined to do the opposite sometimes from excessive begging. I think it would be more honorable to say "If you liked my video, please hit the thumbs up. If you didn't like my video, hit the thumbs down" and you will not only earn the respect of your viewers, you will also be the one in control of the ratings your video recieves. To me it shows that you are confident that you produce high quality material that is useful or entertaining, and that you are looking to improve if you lack in an area (hence tell them to thumb down if they're unhappy). Please don't take it personally. It's nothing against your channel, like I said, I see if all over KZbin. It's understandable too: the views put food on your table. But just please don't forget that you are still dealing with customers in a way, and you want to represent yourself in the best way possible.

whine somewhere else
@zeroqp11 жыл бұрын
It's not whining, it's constructive critisism against the KZbin community and video makers, and the reason I even bothered to type that out is because the content was otherwise good. Do you always mindlessly attack people who do anything but blindly praise what you like? You're coming off kind of silly, mate.
@zeroqp11 жыл бұрын
Matthew Keith Actually, it IS about the amount of thumbs up they get (along with subscribers). A KZbin partner can only make money on the videos they upload if they are actually viewed, and if they didn't have thumbs up it would be much harder to find this kind of content. What I was saying was that it's unnecessary to distract the viewers, as well as waste our viewing time by begging for thumbs in the video, whether they're making it in a cheeky way or subtley. If they have to say it, say it at either the beginning- or the end of the video, and make sure you add "and if you didn't like it, hit thumbs down" besides obviously asking people to subscribe and like if they enjoyed the content and want to see much more of it.
@AleksandrKramarenko11 жыл бұрын
zeroqp Well, there you go, you answered your own question. But let me sum it up from all angles. KZbin channels need to make money to continue to create videos in the future. Channels decide what to create in the future by judging how many views and likes previous videos have received. Some uploaders are working for somebody else and so they might get the sack if they don't get enough views and likes on their videos. Also, KZbin prioritizes videos based on the amount of views, likes, subscribers, the amount of comments and some other things. So based on how popular videos are, KZbin makes them more popular by featuring/recommending them and bumping them up in the search engines. Based on that, uploaders need to ensure their videos get popular if they want other people to find their videos at all. Finally, many people watch videos but do not like them, even though they enjoyed the video greatly. So uploaders need to remind people to like their videos, because the existence of their channel literally depends on it. I think that if you need to get annoyed and blame someone for this behavior, then blame youtube itself. They designed this system where if your video doesn't get likes, it vanishes into obscurity. So that's the simple reason why many channels are begging people to subscribe and like. Don't hate the player, hate the game, etc, etc.
@zeroqp11 жыл бұрын
Sascha Kramarenko This system exists outside of KZbin as well, so it's not exactly something KZbin invented. Like any other instance where you need to reach out to a market and get noticed, you need publicity. Now this doesn't equal begging. Imagine if you were in a mall and some stores you visited kept bugging you about "please tell your friends and family about us", "please make sure to give us a visit next time you're in the mall" etc. Their profits depend on it as well, but that doesn't make it any less unprofessional and deterring from visiting or recommending this place. If you want to get a good reputation, if you want people to trust in your product and in the author, and in fact, if you want to make money, you have to present yourself in a proper way. You have to use your head and do it in a way that is subtle and clean, without sounding nagging or desperate. I know of at least one channel (LinusTechTips) where he actually says "make sure to thumbs up if you liked it, or thumbs down if you didn't like it" etc. I also know of several channels where they make no mention of thumbing or commenting (or do it in a fun and subtle way). Why do they do this? Because they are CONFIDENT in the quality of their work. Their work speaks for itself, and they know it's good. By being consistently good, people keep coming back and enjoying the contents.

When I was 8, I was completely fascinated by butterflies, specifically the monarch butterfly. They're beautiful to look at and most predators wont dare to eat them because they're bright orange to signal them of their toxicity. They migrate yearly in groups of millions. When they rest on forest trees, they are seen less and undetectable unless they move. I have yet the honor of seeing any of their migration patterns, but I hope to some day. Sorry for spouting out my butterfly story. I just felt like a kid again watching this video. Thanks @smartereveryday

I also believe that the holes in the cocoon would also be a defense mechanism against the wind. As you noticed the cocoon is dangling from a single silken thread, and if the cocoon was solid the wind may just blow it away. Therefore holes in the cocoon would allow wind to pass through it with little resistance.
