How I wish the sky team was in india commentating, and that we..the cricket lovers in india, had the option of listening to them. And instead what do we get? Siva, Karthik, Dasgupta, Agarkar and butcher..who were horrendous and did no justice to the fantastic cricket by root, Jimmy, pant. 🙄🙄

As an indian cricket fan, I really envy the English cricket lovers who get to hear such quality pundits regularly. On the other hand, the commentators put out by bcci for the first test, subjecting us to the torture of listening to the whiny voices of Karthik, siva and Agarkar. 😭. Atleast Bhogle could have been a saving grace. I watched most of the test on mute! Such a crying shame despite our rich heritage!!

Atherton’s comment about hitting and hitting thousands of balls is so true, practice and practice and then Bumbles comment on telling someone to go and hit it that way and let them develop their own style before working on technique, personally found those two points really important.

Nasser and Athers are born just five days apart...Athers born on 23 March 1968 and Nasser born on 28 March 1968. They have known each other since their school days. Think they played age group cricket together...Athers made his test debut earlier, but Nasser joined him in the England team soon after. And both have captained each other in the England team...Atherton was captain in the mid '90s and Nasser became captain in 1999. And now, both working together for Sky as commentators. So, their equation is not just professional but personal as well...Athers knows exactly how strict Nasser's dad was when it came to cricket (mentioned on one of Sky Sports Cricket podcasts).

I've seen quite a few comments here saying that this discussion makes no mention of cricket being more accessible to those who attend private school, to those who can afford money to attend academies, financing proper coaching, etc. That means accessibility of the game is a huge problem when it comes to England cricket. Yet the ECB is part of the "Big Three" of world cricket (along with India and Australia). Can someone please explain this? How is it that a cricket board can be so rich yet the sport is not perceived to be accessible enough to all sections of society?

Best advice from this clip : play cricket in any format when your new /young. Quick cricket is such fun and you can learn a lot too in this short format. As a football coach, getting everyone involved is the best way to promote opportunity. You won't please everyone (e.g Parents/Arm chairs supporters) but your giving the chance for all. That's what a coach is there for. Opportunity to learn.

The discussion at the 27:00 mark is so relevant to me as a captain and a coach. Parents have high expectations from their kids and we had a situation last year where an Age Group Manager had his son (who is actually a brilliant all-rounder - altho his fielding needs work) opening the bowling and the batting and other kids weren't getting a go, according to some parents. He ended up being player of the year for that age group, of course, which probably irritated some other parents. It's difficult to balance competing priorities - keep interest, being fair, being competitive and winnings games, leagues and cups.

Great chat guys! So passionate about this as there is huge benefit to the game. However, I think the goals are off? Pro’s represent a small percentage of the game. Can we have an unwritten clear liveable, cultural goal that as coaches we have players who play the game for 10 years after you have been involved with them. Cricket is behind on development, environment design and coaching. Pick up game no, progression through the ages game no, do we have to have 11v 11 at u 11 or even worse u10 age group. Forgive me, deeply passionate about cricket and development.

Interesting that while both Bumble and Athers are from Lancashire, Athers' accent is not as strong as Bumble's...seems much more refined. I suppose all those years at Cambridge University, marrying the daughter of a solicitor (and a journalist), plus living in London for more than 20 years now have refined Athers' accent to a great deal. Remember JDC (Josh de Caires; Athers' son) has his home county as Middlesex and NOT Lancashire.
