Because octopuses' lives are so short, they have no way to pass down their knowledge to their next generations. Just imagine how intelligent octopuses would be if their lives are just a little bit longer.

Not only that, but the fact they are biologically bound to die when the newborns have hatched makes it impossible for parenting, and they are naturally solitary animals. They are biologically unable to pass knowledge down generations, and their instinct tells them to avoid others (because cannibalism is common amongst them). They are so far, yet so close... Maybe we could alter their instinct so they don't avoid each other's presence and don't prey on themselves, but at the same time, some might consider that high levels of consciousness such as ours can be more of a curse than anything.

In order to pass down their knowledge Octopuses would have to display Mammal-Like Parenting skills; but they don’t.

Secondly, even if octopus were a second-declension Latin noun, the plural form would be *octopi; in the correct plurals radii and gladii, with which *octopii is analogous, the first ‘i’s are part of the words’ stems (radi- and gladi-), and not their case endings - for *octopii to be the plural, *octopius would need to be the singular."

@@johnnyfavorite1194 well, obviously they don't because they die before their children hatch from the eggs. I'm just talking hypothetically. And it's wrong to say that only mammals display parenting skills. Birds learn flying and hunting from their parents. If young birds are taken from their nests, they would never acquire these skills.

they are showing this very program on PBS right now. i watched it a couple of evenings ago. he and his daughter brought an octopus into their home and observed him under different situations for the life of the octopus, which sadly in only a year or two. i believe the man and his daughter are jewish, and yes, he has a gentle, friendly voice and appearance.

No, nature does not "let" mammals, bird, marsupials know how to protect itself. It's the giant negative that leads to a gigantic benefit if the parent(s) pull it off. Humans are almost literally the weakest most pathetic babies on the planet.........and are that way for so long it's crazy.

Fascinating, beautiful, informative elaborate and pretty cute. It's amazing how baby anything pretty much looks cute. I macro filmed hatching garden spiders once and there was even a bit of cute in there. Very little but some is more than none.

I think it disrupts their silhouette making it harder for their prey to be able to tell them apart from their surroundings

I think it doesn't do anything but rather their flamboyant color keeps them alive. In the wild, the colorful the creature then it is toxic.
