I recently visited the Great Fen, a large area being returned to natural Fen Land, as well as a number of Big Ideas to manage the precious, peat-based farmland in this area.
I walked the 'Let of the Mere's' trail, which took us along rivers, through woodland and around the edge of fields and farms.
Spread over 14 square miles, and a mixture of Nature Reserves, villages, farms and open land, the Great Fen is unique and so special. Situated between Peterborough and Huntingdon, not far from the A1, it is a great place to visit - a perfect living landscape environment for animals and plants and a place for people to amble through the peaceful fens of Cambridgeshire, where you're certain to see an array of wildlife such as dragonflies, red kites, deer's and many different wildlife species.
The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire are currently raising money to purchase the next stage of the Great Fen project - By Buying Speechly's Farm, they will be able to connect the two National Nature Reserves - Woodwalton Fen and Holme Fen - creating a nature corridor and elevating to benefits this area can bring to wildlife.
This is called their Landmark Appeal - and you can find more details here - www.wildlifebc...
