That’s not practical at all. There is no “realism to this”. Because realistically Joell would never have made such a stupid mistake. He’s established in the first game as a character who is intelligent enough not to trust anyone who he’s just met, and this game completely spits on him and his entire persona and legacy. This is not “realism”, this is pessimism. It is focusing on the most negative, cynical aspects of reality rather than what is actually believable, and the story ends up suffering for it. It’s essentially the inverse of the hero’s tale where everything goes right, in the sense that it for the most part abandons logic and compelling story telling in exchange for negative and exploitive results

I feel like this woulda flowed or been more impactful if it were the reverse: Tommy dies (a good man) and Joel just barely surviving. Then as Joel goes out to avenge his brother, Ellie follows to bring Joel back. The stakes to get Joel back before something happens to him would've been higher, and more effective since we've known Joel for far longer than Tommy.

Naughty Dog made this choice (that I hated at first) to make you feel like... you legit saw your dad die. They delivered the emotional roller coaster they always do with something unpredictable. Then they try to make you feel empathy when you least want it by making you play Abby. Great story telling in my opinion. Not all will love it, but all got an emotional jerk throughout this game and I can appreciate that. You try to forgive Joel for what he did as the game tries to make you forgive Abby for what she did. 9/10

Thats what this game is suppose to do either way. Its suppose to challenge your perception of how you feel. I was heated at first but later throughout the story my perception changes. Edit: The biggest issue wasn't the story. It was the STORYTELLING. Instead of doing an immediate 4 year time jump, they should have kept those flashback within chronological order. The only flashback back that hit home was the famous porch scene. That scene makes what happens that very next day even more impactful.

Joel gained his humanity back because of Ellie. First game, Joel was distant, uncaring of everybody like how he knew the guy faked his injury. Now, with Joel and Ellie settling down with his brother, he lived a comfortable life. His hope for humanity is what led to his demise, a false trust that he unkowingly gave to his killers. In the end, his friendly demeanor led to his death. Saddest part is that if this was TLOU PART 1 Joel, he would have not said his name at all and kept a keen eye.

Ellie was just about to make amends with Joel doing what he did, saving her from creating a cure that would make Ellie someone important in the Last Of Us universe. Abby on the other hand is suffering from her fathers death so they both have their feelings and they both feel closure comes out of taking out people that are responsible but they realize throughout the story that revenge doesn’t help.

In retrospect, that was the most realistic way to kill him off. Did Joel not think he was being hunted? Not only did you stop the world from possibly finding a cure but you killed fathers, brothers, sisters and mothers to save Ellie from a large group. There is no heroic sacrifice, it's a zombie apocalypse. His lapse in judgment to trust is what got him killed
