Man it's hard. I learned French, Spanish, icelandic and sign language, but navajo takes the cake. My wife is Navajo and soon my child will be here and I want them to know their culture, but it's so hard with such limited resources. I live next to the reservation and try and talk as much as I can but still the verbs are so hard and descriptive that I get messed up easy. I hope I can fully learn for them so they can keep diné bizaad language alive.

The best way to learn is through immersion. Try setting up talking sessions with other Navajo speakers, and you'll pick up a lot. Studying grammar should not be your primary goal right now.

I just started learning Navajo as well and I agree! I learned some Spanish and Japanese, but Navajo definitely is the hardest. My partner is Navajo and his family has been wanting me to start learning the language. I also am wanting to start learning now so when we have a child in the next few years, I can try to help keep the language alive as well. I hope you've had a fulfilling journey in the year you've been learning!

I am a native speaker of Arabic, and I learned English when I was a child, and then I learned Italian and French. I decided to learn Navajo because I love your culture and your great history. I have been studying your culture a lot since I was 12 years old, and I used to feel that you are my spiritual ancestors. You are wonderful people.

There should be Navajo language classes in schools, why do we learn French and Spanish when we are in America? We should be learning languages indigenous and native to America to preserve them.

There are tens of millions of Spanish & French speakers in the world. There are likely only 1000'sof speakers of any particular First Nations tongue. If you are a First Nations citizen, by all means learn your language and preserve your culture! It will be a tragedy when these languages go extinct! But to answer your question its far more practical to learn these European languages as they are spoken by people across the globe!

Totally. In Ontario they offer a class to learn ojibwe. It's not a cheap university that offers it and not a cheap class either. In Alberta, there is a group that offers 2 to 3 day lessons in Blackfoot for free, plus there's a PDF you can download off Google. But still, something that should be in schools where they make you learn french/Spanish etc

Hello. I work at a hospital on the Navajo Rez. I overheard afew nurses asking one another how to say certain words and phrases. Asking their patient, "What's wrong?", "Where does it hurt?", "How bad does it hurt?" and so on. I figured it would be a good idea for some fluent in the Dine' language to post these questions for them. So they may learn how to say it correctly. I'm sure this would really help out both the patient & the nurse. I feel bad that us younger generation can't communicate with our elders that need medical attention. And need to be helped CORRECTLY. If the words aren't correct, they could get the wrong meds or poor help.

Dine is such a beautiful language. I am not a native but every time I go to watch powwows in my state, I really like listening the Dine people speak their language. I would like to learn some basic greetings so next time I go to the next powwow, I can at least say hello to some of the natives. Thank you for sharing your videos Mr. Navajo Man.

I wanna speak fluent in Navajo because I had this embarrassing moment at target. Me and my family were picking a doormat and I was confused on which mat my mother was pointing at ( she was speaking in Navajo ) and I guess these two men thought I didnt understand her and said in Navajo "talk to her more in díné and she'll understand better" I- I KNOW WHAT SHES SAYING YOU JERK I WAS JUST CONFUSED. So I have made it my mission to speak fluent🧘‍♀️

I think they had good intentions, and wanted to see your generation learn and thrive to keep the culture alive. I don't think they were being jerks, I think some people understand the weight of language and its connection to who we are more than others and feel its imperative to pass it on to new generations so they never forget who they are and where they come from, and keep their dignity around ignorant peoples.

@@s1r3n1971 LMAO Way to rationalize there buddy! It doesnt matter how right your cause or compelling your message, if you are offensive to others NO ONE cares what you have to say! First rule of thumb when trying to convey a message is to come across as a likable person. If one Can NOT manage that, the rest is pointless!

Hello from California 👋 I would like to take the time to say thank you for taking the time to teach us how to speak Navajo. I just came across your channel now. Pronouncing the words came easy. You are really good at teaching because I actually understood 😂 But still can't pick up Spanish. Maybe it's less intimidating knowing not many understand Navajo. I am looking forward to watching all your videos.

Keep doing what you’re doing and helping spreading the knowledge of this language.

The reason why the “ł” is pronounced like that is because the Navajo where located in areas with rattlesnakes, and the “sh” sound is supposed to be the imitation of a snake hiss. Also as to why in the phrase “where are you coming from” has that hiss is for that full connection because rattlesnakes are tenacious so the full sentence is played off how rattlesnakes interact with something new coming to them. The language of Navajo is so cool and makes me want to learn it more

I've always been very comfortable with learning other languages. Spanish, French, German, and even some Japanese. I've enjoyed all of them. When I first saw a couple of the videos on the Navajo nation, I was immediately drawn to the beautiful and intricate language. I have been able to trace my ancestry to the Creek/ Muscogee peoples. Not too many resources for learning those, but I really enjoy these videos, and hope to see many more.
