As a Native American/Hispanic I have enjoyed the best of both worlds in terms of food. I used to help in the kitchen when we had Taco Tuesday at the Indian Center and we called these Navajo tacos. It is basically the Indian version of a tostada. The leftover fry bread we would put in a container of cinnamon sugar, shake it around till it was heavily coated, put it on a plate, add a scoop of ice cream and cover it with hot apple pie filling. This was one of our best sellers and would be a good dessert for at home meals. You can skip the ice cream if you want and absolutely substitute any kind of topping that you would like. The fry bread just covered in cinnamon sugar is a desert by itself and we sold these by the sack.

As a Native American, I approve this recipe 🫡 You can also do just frybread, seasoned hamburger with lettuce, tomatos & cheese and we call that a Stuffed Frybread drowned in El Pato Sauce 😋

@@astherielleloella-ximena402 my oldest has Celiac so is gluten free. I use King Arthur Measure for Measure flour and it can be used in place of AP flour. I also use their baking flour, muffin mix flour, pancake mix (can also be used for waggles), and GF AP flour mix. Get great results!!

Navajos make their fry bread thinner and sometimes larger some of the cook still use lard for frying which gives it an excellent flavor. The planes tribes turn to make their fry bread a little smaller and fluffier . I know this because my husband is Kiowa and we have been around all kinds of natives who make this wonderful dish which is just called Indian tacos outside of Navajo country

We were tent camping and got hungry for Indian tacos instead of planned regular tacos. In place of the from-scratch dough, we used a couple loaves of frozen bread dough, thawed. Got 8 fry breads out of each loaf. Fried in a cast iron skillet over the campfire. Made dessert with the leftovers using canned cherry and blueberry pie filling topped with a squirt of whipped topping. It wasn’t authentic, but sure was good!!

I remember my first Navajo Taco! I used to attend the Pow Wow events at Morongo in California and there was a stand that sold the Navajo Tacos. They were quite puffier and softer but I am definitely going to give this a try. I always had mine with just beans, lettuce, and tomato.

Navajo tacos are popular in Northern New Mexico, rarely seen down here in Southern New Mexico, I tried making them once, but they came out too hard. I topped mine with refried beans, red chilé con carné, grated colby cheese, and lettuce and tomato. They're good with cinnamon sugar too. Yummy! Thank you for sharing this recipe😋 I love Ranch Style beans too! But I can also make a good imitation with my own home cooked pinto beans and seasonings.

So,,,,,,,,what's ur recipe 4 ranch beans? 🤔 Plz?
@mssixty34265 ай бұрын
@@user-my5ve2fx1k to regular home cooked pinto beans I just add red chilé powder, smoked paprika, smoked salt, ground comino, marjoram and/or oregano and a small amount of tomato sauce or V8 juice. All just by eye, or to taste. I add the spices after the beans are already cooked and then make sure to heat it through without boiling. Boiling will make the oregano bitter. If I have chilé rojo sauce already made, that I don't have plans for (like enchiladas😋) I'll add that instead of the red chilé powder and tomato sauce. Sorry I don't have specific measurements . . .

Try not putting oil in the dough mixture, that is probably the reason the bread is not fluffy. I am Navajo and my family doesnt put oil in dough. Also try a cast iron skillet, makes such a difference as well. And we usually make a big pot of chili beans. Different tribes have their ways of frybread. Good job tho otherwise. I usually tear up my frybread into bite-size pieces and then put chili beans and toppings on top LOL. My lazy way 😁

This looks tasty 😋!!😁! I grew up in Sothern Arizona and am living here again, retired and we as family ate these Fry Bread Tacos homemade as well as driving over to the Mission on Sunday, attend Mass, and getting them fresh fried from the Tohono Oodam! The only slight difference was that the Tohono Fry breads were "flexible"..(lol) and they would be folded in half, and LOADED with goodies.....All kinds of Carne, cheese, Taco meats and veggies, just beans and cheese, you name it! One of those was a meal in its self! We'd get several from several of the vendors and try a little bit of each for the variety alone, and Go home rather full😆! I have not made fry bread for a while and now I have to! 😆😆!
