I love the MAC cannons of humanity. It just fits the humans so well. Plasma weapons for a purple themed faction. And a big bullet for our gun metal coloured humans.

@@trashyhobo4957 Eh UNSC weapons are probably better designed than the bolter. Using rocket fuel to propel an object isn't as optimal as modern smokeless powder, the UNSC using some sort of futuristic gunpowder and electromagnetics to accelerate projectiles is probably superior.

I remember in one au fanfic the author suggested using the point defence loaded with bullets that emit an em wave that could disrupt the plasma torpedo shell since the plasma torpedo is literally plasma incased in a magnetic field so they can steer the thing, thus when the bullet hits the torpedo the magnetic field becomes unstable and then the plasma dissipates harmlessly

I think you should have used big old navy guns rather than the nato round, mainly because a navy cannon is somewhat of a better comparison to a spaceship cannon rather than a common rifle round. Plus, I think that the size of bullets doesn't correlate correctly, but this is what I remember from tank and ship rounds, I may be wrong

If youre going from a more hard sci-fi universe theres not... really anything that can stop a super mac. Short of like a planet (though iv no idea how much damage thatd do to a plant) also in star wars only particle shields can stop physical projectiles. Which most ships dont have. So mass drivers ignore the shields.

"There were two distinct types of deflector shield: ray shields, also known as energy shields, and particle shields. The former protected against energy-based attacks, such as blaster or laser cannon fire, while the latter was developed in response to physical attacks, ranging from projectile missiles and incoming vehicles to asteroids and meteors. Commonly, larger ships and structures were protected by both types of shield, though starfighters often only projected ray shields."

I have to say this. ANY projectile is measured WITH the jacket. The jacket is not added after, it is an important part of the projectile, and in the case of solid copper, brass or lead projectiles, there is no jacket. 7.62x51 nato has a bullet diameter of 7.62mm or .308 inches WITH the jacket, and the casing is 51mm in length.

True, though when older books were written out side the MAC. Ship point defense was either not talked about or conventional guns, not coil guns. The fact covenant shield could take cruise missiles by the hundreds, plus nukes and MAC tell you how OP they were.

I remember reading something on the MK 33 Spitfire coil gun, it mentioned it fired a 13 inch projectile, I think it might have been halo warfleets.

I have doubts that even an FTL civilization would be that wasteful with Tungsten. I suspect the slugs would in reality have A much higher proportion of iron or steel or perhaps even copper if they were going for a fluid projectile effect.

The reason why they use coilguns instead of standard gunpowder is the environment - space. Gunpowder requires an oxidizer, which is absent in space.

Gunpowder is a self oxidizing fuel, in a sealed brass case there is no oxygen, this is exactly why bullets can be fired underwater, albeit usually at the detriment of the firearms structural integrity

Quick suggestion: take the length of the ship, if it's known. Say 5 km long for a certain class. Divide its length with the apparent length of the gun barrels. Say you get 100 meters. Then, you can assume a caliber/slug ratio, usually 50/1 in naval guns, and you get the slug length, thus 2 meters. Compare it with known naval shells to get a diameter. Say you get 40 cms diameter. Thus, now you have everything to calculate impact energy, assuming the same Mach 10 speed.

Using bullets instead of seafaring naval guns is very inadequate. Folks need a good picture for these massive space faring turrets that will combat various threats. And what kind of sucks is that these things were more of a feature after Halo 2 came out. An era that brought about different revisions of various vehicles and weapons. Even though the games still had the scaling issue throughout the franchise....

Are you sure the projectile is made of a iron-tungsten alloy and not a Tungsten projectile with an Iron core to it? Don’t want insult you but I know some bullets and shells have different cores to affect it penetration.

It would make more sense to have a steel cased tungsten core projectile. Tungsten is much much denser, and the iron in the steel would be much better affected by the magnetic coils if it were on the outside.

Sins of the profet is so horridly balanced. I played as UNSC against a easy covenant AI and lost multiple times. Then when i played as covenant against the highest difficulty i won without even trying. Which seems insane whrn you consider how powerful super MACs are. Being able to 1 shot any ship the covenant wields.

If your space combat vessel's kinetic energy weapons rounds aren't moving at *significant* fractions of the speed of light, then they were not worth the effort to produce or the energy required to fire them. At the distances involved, even a lumbering barge can dodge shots that take 10s of seconds to connect. And the closer you get to the speed of light, the less important the mass of your round becomes.

@@robertharris6092 The velocities given for the weapon systems in this video are worthless for 'close range' space combat. The options given these parameters are long range artillery strikes, or knife fighting. Most of the battleground is not covered.

I'm surprised about how slow the projectiles are, the earliest railguns, and even some experimental cannons (ECT) have a velocity of between 5km/s and 7km/s, while modern tank guns have a velocity of between 2-3km/s, making these weapons comparable to modern systems, this maybe due to the era halo was made in but right now, the UNSC are extremely underpowered, not just against the covenant, but also against alot of modern systems.

Mach 10 is currently beyond anything we have. But it's nothing for a space battle. When you look at what weapons you need to fight over interplanetary distances you get into world killing WMD territory really fast. If I remember the numbers for the super MAC video correctly a single round was something like the entire nuclear arsenal in output.

@@bentuovila5296 Modern experimental weapons such as the US navy Railgun and a weapon type known as ElectroChemicalThermal are capable of reach 7km/s, significantly over Mach 10, while a type of missile known as a KEM is capable of reaching Mach 5, modern weapons are horrifyingly fast, issue is the the necessary modifications to the logistics systems required to bring them into service

@@soph1823 The trade-off here is that the Rampart point defense gun is a rapid fire battery. Modern technology might be able to propel a single round to an ultimate higher velocity, But the rapidfire nature of the rampart makes it a far superior system in terms of point defense capability. You’re comparing what would be a modern ship to ship weapon, to a halo point defense gun.
