What would you rather lose, a hand or a foot? Tirpitz was a much bigger threat than aerial bombers. Bombers could be repelled and more easily engaged whereas Tirpitz threatened the entire PQ convoy concept.

So the better choice is to get those defenceless merchant ships stuck in the middle of a battle between two fleets? That is even worse. First of all what was going on was a "cut them off at the pass" move. One, you are engaging the enemy before he can attack the items you are escorting and it also delays their advancement on your charge so they can gain distance between them and the attacking force . Next up, you should look at merchant ships of the time. They had guns that were more for Anti-air defense, but they were not built for a fleet engagement. The merchant ships were not defenseless against air threats, but to sea threats that had no chance to service, so they were dealing with the biggest threat to the merchant ships.

My daddy was in the Arctic Convoy JW-57 at just 17 years old aboard HMS Black Prince. He is now 94 years old and living in a Nursing Home. He will always consider he did a good thing for the Russian people. He remembers seeing the joy on their faces when he arrived at the Russian port. He received the Russian Ushakov medal, which he is very proud of. And we, his family, are very proud of him and what he did during WWII as a boy sailor... Just a few months later, on the 6th June 1944, his ship played a critical part in the D-Day Landings at Utah Beach.

History of the Arctic Convoy JW-57 20 Feb 1944 Allied convoy JW-57 departed Liverpool, England, United Kingdom. It was consisted of 42 merchant ships, was supported by 2 tankers and 1 rescue ship, and was escorted by 4 corvettes (and later reinforced with destroyers and frigates, one being HMS Black Prince). 23 Feb 1944 A British Swordfish aircraft sank German submarine U-713 near Allied convoy JW-57; all 50 aboard were killed. 25 Feb 1944 A British Catalina aircraft sank German submarine U-601 near Allied convoy JW-57; all 51 aboard were killed. At 2055 hours the British destroyer HMS Mahratta (G 23) (Lieutenant Commander E. A. F. Drought, DSC, RN) was hit by a G7es acoustic torpedo from German submarine U-990 about 280 miles from the North Cape, Norway, while escorting the stern sector of convoy JW-57. The destroyer exploded and sank within minutes. HMS Impulsive (D 11) (Lieutenant Commander P. Bekenn, RN) and HMS Wanderer (D 74) (Lieutenant Commander R. F. Whinney, DSC, RN) were quickly on the scene to pick up survivors, but only 16 survivors could be recovered from the freezing waters. The commander, ten officers and 209 ratings lost their lives. 28 Feb 1944 Allied convoy JW-57 arrived at the Kola Inlet near Murmansk, Russia. 10 Mar 1944 arrived safe in Scotland.

It is nice to see the interviews, but the historical accuracy is lacking. The Royal Navy believed that they did not have a large enough surface force to stop the German surface forces in the event of an attack, and when they believed that the Tirpitz was coming they ordered the convoy to scatter on the basis that a surface attack would wipe out the convoy. It was not a casual decision or an incompetent one, based on what they knew at the time. The result of PQ-17 did show that scattering a convoy was no less dangerous against German air and submarine forces than risking a surface attack. I would also point out that there were two other, less dangerous supply routes to the USSR through Iran and via Vladivostok, and that getting American supplies was perhaps even more valuable as a way of filling gaps in the command-economy war effort of the USSR than the number of tanks and airplanes that arrived. As an example, the Soviet factories were ordered to mass produce tanks in the Urals factories, but the Soviet leadership overlooked the need for large quantities of trucks to supply modern mechanized armies, a gap the US was able to fill.

I saw another doco on PQ17 and it put the blame on the Top guy back in England who was suffering from a brain tumor and died shortly after. There was no good reason for all the escorts to leave or for the convoy to scatter. The idea to scatter was proposed to avoid Terpitz and her group being able to take out the convoy and escorts in one go but when the decision was made there was strong evidence that Terpitz was returning to base to avoid the British task force, that's what I remember of it anyway but it's online to watch.

Also I got the Arctic Medal on his behalf but wondered is the Ushakov medal given to allies also or only Russians please?

Actually for me it's quite sad that the PQ-17 convoys been left behind unprotected from any attacks from their escort ships... like come on.. that is what the main objective of escort ships to safely protect the merchant ships until they reach their destination... how much damage can the merchant ships do to the enemies??

They had to take a serious gamble in doing so. Tirpitz was made with the idea of making the ultimate convoy destroyer. It could single-handedly sink a convoy much like PQ-17, escorts or none, leaving it out to roam the Atlantic unhindered was a serious threat to all convoys in the area. From the perspective of the British Admiralty, letting a single convoy out to the wolves in order to sink Tirpitz was much better than seeing one convoy make it safely, then dealing with the potential damage that Tirpitz could cause, which would be leaps and bounds larger than just a single destroyed convoy. They're gamble did not pay off, however, and they paid dearly for their mistake, but considering the facts they had at hand, it was a legitimate decision to make.

Actually the British, sort of, did it again. They didn't properly protect American forces practicing for D Day landings and E boats sank an LST. British were supposed to protect them, but barely provided half the required protection they promised to provide. A LOT of US Army soldiers died thanks to that.

They actually send a blockade force at the E boat harbour but before the blockade force arrive a good number of E boats left their harbour and sank not one but two LST.

Iowa is not in good condition. Among a lot of things, her deck is still rotten, the floors of the interior halls are warped, most of the electrical and plumbing don't work, and most significant of all, Gun 2 of Turret 2 is still destroyed. She may still have a new coat of paint, but she is broken inside. As I wrote in a poem about Iowa; "Fresh and new on the outside, But old and worn on the inside."

I couldn't agree more. I went to the Hornet about a year ago, paint is starting to chip in the engine spaces, water damage is really evident in the piping, it's a mess. I tear up whenever I look at pictures of the USS Salem, the last heavy cruiser in existence. Paint is wearing away, rust growing on machinery from gaps in the paint, and there's weeds growing up from the deck, fucking *weeds.*

The Hornet is privately funded. They get no supplementation from the US government. She desperately needs to be dry docked to repair the below water damage, but there are no funds to fix her, not to mention there are no operational dry docks in San Francisco Bay that can take her. We would have to tow her north to Seattle, or south to San Diego or Long Beach

I've been trying to raise awarness of the need to repair these ships, hell I've even swollowed my pride and emailed President Trump himself and any of the candidates to try and get them to take notice and offer federal funding to fix these ships, but I feel the only way we can save these ships is if everyone puts pressure on Congress, Trump and their State Legislatures to free up funding

I would like to Thank YURIY KRYUCHKOV for his work here in Wargaming! Without english as a 2nd language, these types of mini-documentaries are a real BITCH! The language gape (or dare I say Barrier) of the many dialects, but the 38 countries that use it as a main language. And all the prior service members can attest too, releasing ANY info that isn't Heavily redacted. I get the translator stuff (softwares) but even those are not up to snuff. Unless you can get a person born in 1 of the Leading economic countries, with the higher educations, I mean think of the mirriad of rules and s.o.p's Go to this department no go see so-n-so, you need form _____ ity _____ etc........ Then mix in the relationships between some of these countries!! HOLY SHIT STORMS! But through all of it Mr KRYUCHKOV and his team, I say to you, THANK YOU!! I have 22 yrs of service with 75 Ranger Regiment and I know, It ain't easy Damn near impossible just a couple of years ago. You most definitely earn your paychecks!
