Needs to reopen ASAP Navan along with Tuam must be one of the biggest towns in the Republic without a train service !

Tuam is a village. Swords has a bigger population than Galway city and no rail conection.

Navan desperately needs a train connection to Dublin, promised since the year 2000. This was a freight line to Drogheda, the potential for a profitable passenger service is slim, but dismantling the line would be a poor move.

If this existing Navan to Dublin railway is fit for Tara Mines freight trains it should be a relatively cheap option to upgrade it for passenger services in the short-term. These services would not further congest the Drogheda-Dublin route if some existing Drogheda-Dublin services paths were simply extended to Navan.

Unfortunately the line south of Navan to Dublin has since been removed almost entirely and sold off. Boliden freight run via Drogheda and connect with the northern line to head south to Dublin port for export. So any commuter line between Navan and Clonee would need to be rebuilt from scratch.

at least a heritage rail society operating out of there......we tend to just let these useful and expensive ( to rebuild ) resources go to hell, because of some petty excuse to save money....what about the "peasants"....we the people......who would use the facility, if there was political will to reinstate and operate at a non profit level.......come on elected people...look after us

In the event of passenger trains coming back to Navan, it won't be to this station as it is facing the wrong way for the line from M3 Parkway.

Yeah, the station for Dublin was further up the line (not much) from the station shown in the video. The station was called Navan junction, as it was where the Dublin to Kingscourt line met the Drogheda to Oldcastle line. An old goods shed is all that survives there now in what I think is a cash and carry business on the site of Navan junction station.

@davidpryle3935 it interesting to note how far north the Kingscourt greenway starts. Almost like Irish Rail have kept the land between the junction and the greenaway for a station.

Another poster made an interesting comment concerning the present Navan to Drogheda line, basically saying that if the line to Dublin reopened, the only user of the Drogheda line Tara Mines might be inclined to use the reopened line because of the shorter distance, and that would leave the Drogheda line with no traffic.

It was scheduled to reopen in July - I haven't heard that it didn''t reopen.

Only in Ireland. The proposed reopening of this existing rail line for passenger traffic has been costed in multi millions of euro and an estimated reopening in 2035!!!

@NoelCampbell-e2l Not true. What is proposed is rebuilding the line from M3 Parkway to Navan. There is no serious proposal to introduce passenger services between Drogheda and Navan.

Is their any point in reopening this line, seems like a terrible waste. Even if they ran it just Navan to Drogheda to link with the main line.

@liamgaynor3576 If/when TARA mines train run, this is the only route from Navan to Dublin Port. In the event of the line from M3 Parkway being rebuilt, the line from Drogheda to Navan would close as the mileage via M3 Parkway is significantly shorter.

Reopening the line would encourage people to not drive to Dublin and reduce congestion, help the local economy by having more people living in the area with a frequent rail service to Dublin. The line should be extended to Kells and further North West over time.
