John does experiments to find out in the real world. What is the best Mpg you can expect from the Navara Np300 auto. How much it can be improved by hypermiling techniques, and how far it can be damaged through aggressive driving. We also discover how accurate the trip computer is.
We have a separate video on how to do all of the Hypermiling techniques used during the experiments.

Hi John, recently sub’d as I’ve just picked up an NP300. Thanks for the informative videos, really enjoyed this one and to see how you got on. Before today I’d not had chance to do any solo motorway driving but pleased to report similar mpg. I was a little worried prior to this as having just spent 16 days in France Towing our caravan there and back I achieved much less economy. With a fully laden truck and fully loaded large single axle caravan we achieved about 25mpg. Which was not all that alarming for such a big, heavy vehicle. Looking forward to seeing more vids. Cheers, Andy

I have one of these an auto and have just done a 1200mile round trip and averaged around 38 to the gallon, best ever is 47.1 although I was bored stiff achieving this figure, all said an done its still quite impressive for the type of truck it is, try and do that in any of the competition may find it difficult. well done.

Thanks Billy. I have tried a similar experiment in an auto example of the previous generation L200 and wrestled 38 mpg out of it but that was definitely as far as I could push it. Where as I know that under the right circumstances a little more was possible from my Np300. Im happy with my result though because as I said, I wanted to know the real world max. Congratulations on the 47.1Mpg! Nissan will want you in their adverts!😁👍

Interesting video, I have a manual and an automatic through my business. The automatic is around the same mpg as yours, the manual best ever is just over 55 mpg but usually averages mid 40s. The Manuel has stop start which rarely works, usually as I arrive home!
@ToTheGarage
@ToTheGarage 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Eric. I had assumed that the manual would achieve a little more than the Auto, but until your comment that was just an assumption. Modern Autos are very effective and probably achieve a much more consistent result rather than a much worse result. I reckon in a manual I would have achieved a slightly better 'best' mpg as the hypermiling techniques have more effect. However, I know I would have achieved a much lower worst MPG on my return journey as I could have put the motor under far more duress.

Hi John, thanks for the great vid. I am currently fighting with Nissan over my consumption as I cannot get better than 32mpg (Auto) no matter how I drive it. My regular trip is from Shrewsbury to my office in Middlesbrough (very rock 'n roll). This is a round trip of 400 miles, A road and dual; carriageway. I would be ecstatic to achieve 38+ mpg. Some things I have noticed is once my fuel light warning is on and range miles disappear, a can only get 61-62L in the tank, meaning I still have 13L left. At this point I have generally done 420-430mi. Nissan are telling me mine is with spec, but cannot tell me what the spec is. Dealer suggests that if it was less than 20mpg they would consider it a problem but most only get 25-27mpg. Pretty poor from an advertised 42mpg combined (and class leading consumption)

Additionally, totally unladen as well as the vehicle is more for pleasure and beating the crap roads around where I live.
@ToTheGarage
@ToTheGarage 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew. thanks for the subscription. That does sound low for unladen A road/dual carriageway driving. Because of the poor aerodynamics, they are disproportionately affected by speed. If you can bear the tedium try one of your commutes with the cruise (or better still the speed limiter) locked on 60mph. If that does nothing for your consumption at all, then I would say its big ammunition to fire at Nissan. Do you have an open tray? or a canopy or toneau cover fitted. No idea on the size of deficit but I know that an open tray creates a lot of extra drag.
@andrew2703
@andrew2703 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment John - I have a hardtop fitted. I did have an A-bar on with Spots, but that has been removed. It also played havoc with the radar sensor behind the bumper. I have the same tyres on as you, and funny enough after watching your service video, I also had a Jaguar XF previously. I found it heavy on tyres (+/- 25k/set) but i did get great consumption as it regularly did 45mpg on the same trip.

I owned a 2011 model Navara that was 9 years old at the time and had the 5 speed auto gear box. Over about 8,000 miles I averaged 36mpg which I think is pretty good. The trick is not to drive with a heavy right foot, avoid cruise control and switch off air con when not needed. I also used to put the truck into neutral when waiting at lights which is good practice anyway.

I've just done 72 miles on the m1 driving at 65-70mph in my 2016 190 tekna Auto .My average fuel consumption was 46MPG if i toodle to & from work around 22 miles a day im getting 34MPG average just driving steady . short drives in winter sees a drop in mpg as diesels need to be at operating temp to get the best mpg . As the man says if you drive it quick then maybe 3-4 mpg less only . its a beast of a vehicle with affordable fuel bills .

Hi John, as an NP300 owner love the videos. I have a non fuel related question for you, over here in OZ theres a number of NP300 owners making complaints through various Navara forums in regards to a vibration or more accurately a wobble that occurs mostly at highway speeds when the vehicles reach 100 - 110 kph then ceases when accelerating past 110 kph. Some vehicles have this problem some don't, there seems to be no common denominator, all series all models 2015 - 2019. Some people me included have spent lots of money trying to resolve the issue. Nissan Dealers are avoiding it as they do not know the issue and many are leaving dealers without the problem fixed. Is this something that you have heard of or come across yourself with the NP300 models in the UK ? Any info would be muchly appreciated as ther's a lot of frustrated NP300 owners over here..
@ToTheGarage
@ToTheGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Not heard anything about that Matt. So maybe it is isolated to your continent? If so we would be looking for what is different on Oz spec vehicles. First instinct would be a different brand or spec of tires is used for your road conditions? (Continentals are standard in UK)

Hi John, On your conservative driving run you did 323.7 miles and the Navara consumed 38.29 litres of diesel. 38.29 litres = 10.11 gallons. This equates to 32 miles per gallon - which is a long way off the 42.3mpg reported by the Navara's economy calculation! This closely follows my experience with my 2018 STX manual transmission. The economy figure reported by the Navara is a nonsense and not even close to the "class leading" figures that they advertise.
@ToTheGarage
@ToTheGarage 5 жыл бұрын
Lyndon Stanley . Hi Lyndon Sorry for any confusion. Uk gallons are larger than American ones Crazy I know. 38.29 litres is 8.42 uk gallons. But separately, cars rarely go anywhere near the manufacturers estimated mpg. I recon on them quoting 10% better than can be achieved. And as they are all pretty much as bad as each other on this, you can at least use manufacturers figures as a rough comparitor to other brands manufacturers figures Cheers John👍

@@ToTheGarage Hi John - in that case your measured UK 38.36 mpg (or 7.36 litres/100km) is actually very close to Nissan's specification. If I were getting such economy then I would be very happy. I suppose not all diesel fuels are the same? Does your fuel range warning come on when there appears to be still at least 20% remaining? There is an official Nissan Australia You Tube video where they do 1247-kms on 80-litres (or 6.4litres/100km) - I don't know how they managed that figure unless they drove at 70km/h the entire distance! Thanks for the interesting videos showing us the UK country side.

D S 9.7 l per 100km is 29imperial mpg (uk) It’s not an extraordinarily bad figure and I could achieve that on shorter journeys fully loaded. But it’s not good as a best figure compared to mine (high 30s and early 40’s mpg) It’s really hard to compare mpg’s though as driving style is a such a big variable. Fuel quality and emissions controls are also factors when we compare country to country. I also have advantages also of :- Canopy (aerodynamic advantage) Automatic box ( stops me thrashing it) Uk cool climate Light load most days.

Here in Australia, my nav with a manual can only best 7.3 l per 100kms. That normally with half 80 kms an hr and limit highway speed to 100 because 110 chews the fuel. At 100 my manual does a high 2250rpm. At 115km its all thw way up at 2500 rpm. Dont know what the point of have a 6 speed with moderately tall 1st and 2nd then make the gap so small on 5th and 6th.
