Excellent video - thank you. As I understand it, on this particular model you can send off for a disk that will translate everything to English? Seen this service advertised by someone in NZ (I think). You heard of that? And if you have is it worth doing?

I had the green shower on my previous XK8 and replaced the lines by myself. No experience other than the KZbin videos current at the time. It was spread out over 2 days but if I hadn't quit early on day 1 it would have been about a full 8/9 hour job. As John says, nothing too technical and tools the average DIYer would have is all you need. Oh yeah a some patience as EVERYTHING in the way has to come out. Header panel, A pillar, sill, carpet, both seats (easier with both out), rear seat (back and bottom), rear interior side panel, some bracing in the rear... you get the idea. But like John the cost vs. having a mechanic do it was significantly less. Great video as always John. Wise preventative maintenance.

Great and instructive videos as usual. I have the same question as to how does the air come out of the system when you operate the system after purging
@jagvette1Күн бұрын
Love the idea of lubing the roof, I will do that before I install my replacement roof, Video will come when I do it. Damn your as anal as me I use Dielectric grease on all rubber bits when I put them back, especially those bloody awful engine covers. Too late now but after i took the cover off I disconnected the pipes then Blew through with and airline to get the old fluid out them flushed through with brake cleaner , obviously making sure to catch it all in the boot with a suitable container. That way I didn't have to remove the head rail out

Hi John, what a great set of videos! I am wondering where the air goes when you refill the hoses and the cylinders? If there is some kind of circulation at all, I might be tempted to just flush the system a couple of times?

My 2000 XK8 developed a green drip from the rear wheel arch not such a green shower, it was the two rams that lift the roof etc had developed leaks (seals perished) plus the pipework couplings also leaking and as I investigate they’d started to go at nearly every joint even in the top latch. I managed to get a replacement set of rams, latch and pipework from a company called ‘Top Hydraulics’ they did an exchange even though I’m in the UK and they’re USA. Took me about a day to do and the replacement parts felt better quality than the orig Jag parts.

I've got my hands on one that I'm trying to fix back up it's missing the cats and it's got several interior panels missing and some things unplugged and it's been painted flat black it would be more than buying one to make it worth the resale price for one so I'm thinking half resto mod and half race car does anyone have any ideas for custom lcd screen guage clusters for a 97 convertible 4.0 also everyone is saying not to trade my 04 Colorado for it but it's on corvette wheels and I want to get it drivable and on the road cause it's the closest thing to a super car I've ever been able to get and the top opens up when you are going for a cruise I've fallen in love with it slowly

@ToTheGarageКүн бұрын
At that price. Corrosion on rear suspension arms can cause a collapse. Check that there are no EGR DPF Oxygen level or flow rate related codes when you put a code reader on it. If so, the risk of a bad turbo, catalytic converter or blocked rebreather system is just too high on a car where any repairs would be more costly than the price of the car. Assuming auto. Check that there is no sign of slip in the transmission or loud clonks when engaging drive. On the plus side. They are essentially a good car with a good engine.🤞

Hi John, Wow, ep 122 of Secrets of the XK8. I have watch them from day 1. I was a proud contributor to episode 3 and even got a mention by name. My only claim to fame 🙂 Great information again as usual. It would be really handy to show in a future episode if possible. How to reposition/raise the roof manually. What is not commonly known is that unless the hydraulic rams have lifted and locked the roof hinges. The sensor in the right hand roof ram prevents the rear quarters windows to raise. Not good if you are outside without fluids (Green Shower) or a broken pump and you want to be rainproof or secure. Also handy if you are in the middle of a lengthy hose replacement outdoors. I have only seen one KZbin video demonstrate on how to jump the relays in the boot to raise the rear windows in this scenario. (I can send a link if allowed?) It would be great to see a video from our very own XK8 Guru JD. I think it would be very helpful to many in trouble. Keep up the great work. Gary.

When you replace with a new fully charged or fully recharged existing battery, it needs to be re-coded. Any charge above 90% is best. The management system will continue to give the same error codes if it was the battery that was contributing to the issue.

@jagvette17 күн бұрын
Two points I would make, that you may wish to cover in another video, IF reaching inside the hood to release the top be VERY careful not to get your fingers trapped, I prefer the outside meathod, less painful. Secondly the rear windows can be lowered by jumping the relays in the boot.Also if it hard to push the top back it could be because the valve isn't fully open.(yes like you I open fully then go back a bit but it can cause a problem)
@ToTheGarage6 күн бұрын
Hi Gary. Loving the black XK8 content. Sorry you are again battling the chinesium 😁 If it isnt that, its the parts made of unobtanium🤣 Good tip re finger trapping👍 And I think I will do something on relay jumping, to help those out who have had a roof failure with the windows in the wrong position for the weather. Might try using one of my switched test relays🤔
@jagvette15 күн бұрын
@@ToTheGarage yes I have those relays as well but I doubt most people will which is why I suggest telling them about using a piece of wire to short out the two terminals that will make the widows operate

Hi John - as mentioned in a previous post I replaced my hydraulic fluid a few weeks ago. Unfortunately I didn’t think to time the opening/closing. It is running far more smoothly now and the cringeworthy grinding/ struggling sounds have gone. Looking forward to seeing your vid so I can see all the steps I missed!!
@ToTheGarage6 күн бұрын
I would still be interested to hear what time you get for your now refreshed system Richard
@RichardBurgess-bn6lx6 күн бұрын
Hi John - just timed the open and close from start until the “bong”. Both procedures took exactly 17 seconds, so would suggest the flush and refill has worked a treat. See if you can beat that!!!
@RichardBurgess-bn6lx6 күн бұрын
As I am sure you remember, my XK8 is a 1996 “PJ”, so the system will be the same age as Purdy. The liquid looked dark so I assume it had been replaced at least once in the last 28 years.

Well explained again John. First job is to time my own roof on my 98 XK8. I've always wondered how long it should take. The noise of the pump always makes me wince slightly as I imagine the tremendous pressure those pipes are under. Maybe a follow up on some ideas to reduce that seemingly ridiculous pressure would be in the pipeline. Pun intended!

Mine is quite noisy so it will be interesting to see how much quieter it is with new fluid

Thanks for doing this video! Trying to explain unlocking the rams is a bear without video of somebody doing it. Also just to note if your rams are worn or leaking, they might not lock. My 97 rams did not lock till I upgraded my hoses & put in rebuilt rams & front latch to fix a leak.
