NAVHDA Utility Test - Duck Search

This is a demonstration of the Duck Search Portion of the NAVHDA Utility Test. This is for demonstration purposes only so you can better understand how the test is set up and prepare for the duck search portion of the Utility Test. This is an example of how a duck search could be set up and ran at a Utility Test. We provided two duck search scenarios for comparison purposes. This video was created to help people know what to expect at the Utility Test during the Duck Search. There are no scores attached to the performance of the dogs. Please note this is a mock test and though we are using electronic training collars during this set up, during an official NAVHDA Test no e-collars are permitted. This video was not produced by NAVHDA and all of the demonstration is our own personal views of a Utility Test.

GSPs that willingly spend that much time in the water repeatedly expanding their search with no giving up is an astounding testimony to the breeder, trainer and handler. That demonstration was a triathlon for a superb athlete! Educational, fun to watch and leaves me in awe of the dedication and drive these dogs have. Good job by all!!

Great video! I'd love to hear some commentary from a NAVHDA judge as well, but this goes a long way for some of us newer chapters who may not have the experience of UT testing.

Glad you enjoyed the video! However, we aren’t able to offer scoring in these videos! We highly recommend going to a rules and aims clinic to get a better understanding of how the scoring works!

Thunder I was fry trained with the e-collar to make the bank hot. Another low desire water dog being trained to pass duck search. The dog kept trying to come back, but has been conditioned to stay off the bank. That is obvious at the beginning when the dog was sent. Score 3 at most. Dog #2 Arrow gets a score of 4, not because the dog found the duck, but because the dog was legitimately searching, expanding, and enthusiastic about the task. A nice search.👍

You believe very wrong. Thunder has never had a collar used at duck search, the only reason he has one on is recall. Thunder is very cooperative and visually oriented so he tends to look to his handler when he’s unsure.

@simonburke5958 , not impressed by the search of Thunder dog. Maybe it was just a bad search day, it happens. The dog Aero, searched like a boss. Bold, confident, and enthusiastic.

The point of the video was to show to different searches. Thunder was in training and we knew what his search was, it was to help see the contrast in the searches.

I like the idea of showing 2 demonstrations with dogs at different levels. But I think the video loses value when you don't have commentary after regarding what the judging group saw out of each dog (ie the positives and negatives of each search). If I'm brand new looking for information on what to expect from the duck search this told me nothing more than I need to tell my dog to swim. I guess they can read through the comments and get 3rd party opinions on each dog. Regardless, I still enjoy all the videos, thanks for all the work you put into them!

Probably should explain and demonstrate that a dog finding the duck early within the 10 minute search time will need to be resent WITHOUT a shot. It’s definitely a scenario that needs to be trained for.
