NAVHDA Utility Test - Field Phase

This is a demonstration of the Field Phase of the NAVHDA Utility Test. This is for demonstration purposes only so you can better understand how the test is set up and prepare for the field portion of the Utility Test. This is just one example of how a field run could be set up and ran at a Utility Test. This video was created to help people know what to expect at the Utility Test during the Field Phase. There are no scores attached to the performance of the dogs. Please note this is a mock test and though we are using electronic training collars during this set up, during an official NAVHDA Test no e-collars are permitted. This video was not produced for NAVHDA International and all of the demonstration is our own example of a Utility Test.

Great video. I would like to know how you would score this portion of the test. what did you see that Thunder did well and what, if any, he could have done better? Thanks

I’m not a judge, but I can tell you what I saw. What he did well: search, point, steadiness, use of nose, stamina, desire… all 4s. What a judge would be definitely taking notes on: obedience especially after delivery of the bird and after hitting the pond. The trainer gave too many commands each time. A judge will count the number of commands/corrections: “ah, ah, ah, here, thunder, here” each time, that could be 6 commands from a judges standpoint. Fairly certain they would ding them on obedience there. Retrieve of shot bird is a question mark from me because the deliveries were not clean at the handoff and immediately after but a judge might give him a 4 and ding him in obedience instead. However, since the trainer seemed to have to swipe the birds, I wouldn’t expect to see a 4 on the retrieve score. Also, of course, that last bird was not ideal, but since he had a number of clean sequences, that last one should average out. Overall good run, I’d just clean up the delivery and heeling/under control part. You only need 3s in retrieve and obedience so… that could have been enough for a prize 1 anyways.

Very interesting to watch and great coverage with the drone. One thing, coming from the UK, I am surprised you don't use a whistle but use voice commands. But, whatever, it doesn't matter as Thunder looks a great pal to have out in the shooting field.

Steadiness looked clean to me??? It was the retrieve and obedience I thought were 3s.

@@burkkus when Charles relocated Thunder and he took out the bird. I would think that would count against steadiness. I can see your point that that may not make it a three. Cooperation is a cumulative score so it would be marked against but not sure you can say a three based just on that.
