Al made a sampling masterclass with Aulart recently. I won't spoil everything, but one thing he does is he has a drum beat playing from his MPC while he searches for melodic samples.

This is why producers need hardware. I highly advocate an mpc or roland to producers who don't have one. Something with like a minute sample time, separates boys from men

@@ConnieVeenuhs Roland Sp 404 and the Mpc 2000 together GOES CRAZY, thats what you should start with. My favorite hardware: Roland Sp 505(the best lofi machine on the planet quiet as kept), ASR 10, Roland Sp 303 midi'ed to my Roland groovebox 202 for bass sounds (made popular by madlib) and if you have some shmoney, the sp1200 is the greatest of all time but its worth $3000 but id say its worth it. Lastly, J dilla made alot of his classics on the mpc 3000.

I’ve always done that. Make a drum beat, go thru vinyl until something sounds ok with the drums. Then chop the sample. It makes things go much quicker when making a beat.

Man Return of the Mac was my shit. It came out in high school and crazy thing is it was a mixtape. We all just listened to mixtapes back then because they were all better than the mainstream albums. That tape was supposed to be the appetizer for the album. Ended up being WAY better than the album lol. I miss that era a bit but I’m just glad dudes went back to making great albums.

It’s a nod to Da Beatminerz who flipped that sample like 10 years prior on Black Moon - I got cha opin remix. The hook on that track is “don’t front, you know I got cha opin”, hence Prodigy naming his track “stop fronting”.

I never thought that beat was that impressive since that BW had already been rocked by so many people including Buckshot and BDK. I prefer the more obscure samples he uses. It seems like he knocks out a whole album in a week. It also seems like afterwards some of the artists are going down the street to make some tracks with Muggs. I like the music camp formula, it would be so dope if he would invite producers also and have three studios going. Imagine getting a Method Man album produced by Havoc, Alchemist and Premo!

There is another interesting aspect. The first 2 chops of the "stop fronting" beat are from a well known sample. After hearing the first chop for several times, people wait for the second chop. Finally he reveals the 2nd chop, but not as expected as he uses only a short part while adding some more sounds. A great way to play with the expectations of the listeners..

Alchemist has been producing for a while; I thought he was overrated UNTIL Freddie Gibbs and Cormega “Glorious” song. He immediately catapulted out of the “Overrated” terrain. I don’t know what engineer or mixer he game across, but the improvement in the sonics of his track took his beats to an elite level. I almost thought Dr. Dre mixed his shit it sounded so good!

Eddie Sancho is the guy who mixes many if not all of ALC's beats. Infact he's a Longtime engineer for ALC, if anything Sancho improved or found the sweet spot for mixing ALC's beats. And I know exactly what you mean about the sonics of his music, I've noticed the change over the years being a huge ALC fan since like 2001.
