It's EU specific problems _mostly_. Contributing factors are shit local regulations and crap roads for the most part. Truly Tesla works much better when the roads are higher quality (referring not to quality of the asphalt which hardly matters but the lines on the road itself are important markers that the autopilot use to "see" the road but a lot of eu roads don't have outside lines which causes problems for the software. (seriously just watch the road during the video and see what I mean, typically no outside lines) On ideal roads and without stupid regulations autopilot works really really well already and is already much safer than human driving.

@@hikaru9624 I disagree. Autopilot seems to work really well in the US from the video's and reports I've seen. I think the issue is there is not enough Tesla's on UK roads for the AI to learn how to drive well in this particular environment. Also some of the criticisms in this video are not exactly fair. The narrator remarks that the car crosses over the lane slightly while turning when the car in front, which is not on Autopilot, does the exact same thing. It is made clear that the driver needs to be paying full attention while using Autopilot and the data does show, over many hundreds of millions of millions driven, that Autopilot does in fact reduce accidents. Also this video was made almost immediately after a new update and my understanding is that after such updates it takes some time for the system to relearn to drive again. There are plenty of video's from the US where Autopilot is used to drive without any intervention for significant periods and in many different environments. But even those video's are just anecdotal, the data speaks for itself, Autopilot reduces accidents and deaths while driving. And with Tesla's new hardware, and once the AI is trained on more data from the UK, I suspect that we will see similar results as we do when watching video's of Autopilot in the US.

Actually it's more to do with the design of the autopilot. Ideally you would confirm a lane-change by some other means than the turn signal to indicate the intent of changing lanes. Then the autopilot should find the appropriate moment to do the actual lane change, only then should the turn signal turn on and the car should turn to the other lane. The way it is handled now is short-sighted solution to a sensible traffic rule, which is there obviously for safety reasons. To me this is strong evidence of the long way this AI has yet to go to be able to go full autonomic. Musk is way too optimistic about the time line of when he believes autonomous driving will be implemented..

From a software developer point of view that timeout looks like a hasty patch to meet regulations. When making a surprise change a developer has to consider development time, test time, etc. Sometimes it is necessary to pick an option that can be delivered safely on time instead of something that would work better. There are probably a few developers unsatisfied with what they had to do. Maybe they'll get an opportunity with more runway that they can do it right.

And there lies the problem, it only takes one person to not pay attention or one wrongly calculated turn at the wrong moment and cause an accident. And then who's responsible, the person driving? Even though he never intended or wanted the action that was taken by the car? I guess I'm playing devils advocate here, because I would very much have this technology. But they have a lot of logs with every sensor readings over time, they probably can notice how the car was changing decisions and how driver was "fixing" autopilot moves. I guess (and hope) they got the logs before author managed to do video editing and youtube upload :P Now it's time to spot and fix the issue :) I heard opinions that people can actually see autopilot getting better over time without them reporting anything. You are only allowed to drive on the other lanes if you overtake a slower vehicle (or a bunch of slower vehicles). Another rule says that you can only overtake on the left side. A 'middle lane hog' is someone who drives (slowly) in the middle lane on a 3 lane road, while the right lane is empty. This means this person basically occupies two lanes, because you are not allowed to overtake him on the right lane, which only leaves the left lane for everyone faster moving. A quick note about the new rules - steering angle is only restricted above 15kph, so Tesla should be able to keep autopark and summon (what's left of it). I did not expect the indicator limit to be THAT problematic. It's insane. You're absolutely right that shadow mode should calculate the move before putting the blinker on. Losing lane changes on dual carriageways is frankly disastrous, as it essentially nerfs the Tesla to the automation level of my Ioniq - that is, just lane follow and TACC. A further note on the Autosteer angle reduction - it's now the same restriction as other auto steer systems. However, the Tesla handles it better than other cars - it tries to slow down, whereas other cars just instantly hand back control to the driver. Ps. You're right about the merge-on - it didn't have a clue it was merging, that was just normal AP following the markings. And the less said about the merge-off, the better. That shouldn't have shipped - it's outright dangerous. I'm still holding out for the day we get no confirm nav on AP, but it's not looking like that'll be anytime soon. Ps ps ps, it's a UN regulation affecting Europe, NOT an EU regulation!

A UN regulation? o.o How does that work, there's tons of countries in the UN - the USA being one of them, and we don't have these regulations holding back our auto-driving technology atm. (Sorry I'm a stupid American not well-versed in how these kinds of things work...)

It seems like it's continuously calculating the lane change when it suggests it, when the line is red the car judges that it can't change (mostly it thought the car behind was to close, even though it didn't show up on the display yet), and if the situation doesn't clear within 5 sec of you indicating it will cancel, however if you wait for the line to turn grey again it should do the operation promptly. That said, margins and speed calculations could be much tighter. He never tried querying an impromptu lane change on the motorway though... would've been nice to know if it could handle it or not. The summon issue might be related to that wonky sensor?

Turns out that you can't rollback. My car won't lane change at all now if standard autopilot is on. It days that the function is inhibited every time you try. Tesla put v16.3 on it with same result. Those big arrows seem to confuse it, thinking it is a line

@MrJohnboyofsj 5 жыл бұрын
I noticed that too. It should be easy enough for a well trained AI to see the difference between a line and an arrow... I think the problem is simply the data set for the AI training is not large enough in the UK. Does not seem good at all that it is limited by that though.

autopilot doesn't care which side of the car the driver is sat. However, it could explain why the autopilot has a right bias on motorway lanes.

You should set the following distance to 1 when navigating on auto-pilot, and letting it handle the lane changes. because at 2 or 3, it seems to require a much much bigger gap to merge onto.

The reason I think why it’s not indicating onto the motorway is because the line just goes out of sight then thinks that the lane got bigger then back smaller and doesn’t think about where it is on the map

That's just dumb. I would argue, that restricting the steering angle is even more dangerous... And if regulations restrict the usability of the AP in EU, that would suck. It's OK not to trust the AP yet. But why make the drivers life harder by restricting it even further? Also, imagine what this means for other car companies with certain autopilot-features, that don't have over-the-air updates.... EU!

Another comment had pointed out that this was a UN Treaty thing so I went and looked it up and it appears so. UN Regulation 79 (.02), signed by most of Europe, the UK, and Japan. The US didn't sign on and after reading a small summary on it I think I can see why. I don't know why the fuck they needed a treaty on THIS. From a site talking about 79.02, an amendment to the original regulation that pertains to electronic autosteering systems, they gave a summary on the original Reg 79. "Regulation 79, known throughout the industry as simply Reg 79, was created with the intention of providing a common understanding and thus a definition of what a “steering system” fitted to a road vehicle is, from their layout to the performance of the overall system, and thus to provide a basis on which steering systems are to be evaluated for their suitability for the outside world." If you're curious if your country signed Reg 79, introduced back in 1988, check here: treaties.un.org/Pages/ViewDetails.aspx?src=TREATY&mtdsg_no=XI-B-16-79&chapter=11&clang=_en

Dan, great video and keep up the good work. Could not agree more with your observations. As a UK MS Tesla driver for the past year, the car has constantly got better. However, since the last update 2019.16.2 last week, and as your report highlights, it has got significantly worse and the car is definitely more cautious/tentative and dangerous. I have experienced all the points you raised on a single journey over the weekend. In particular, and of major frustration to me being the car's inability to 'offer' to move to the left from the centre lane of the motorway, and also the frequency of 'nags' to hold the steering wheel down to approx. every 15 sec. In the end I switched AP/NoAP off, just simply too stressful for the driver and also the passengers. This is not a good situation. Great to see the UNEC keeping us all safe on this side of the pond! Great report here from Steven in Belgium kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5PHo6mKr7F7jLM Please help us in protesting these changes by signing this petition: secure.avaaz.org/en/community...
