It was early morning when we departed our hotel in Virginia, and while we were not even leaving the state, it would still be over a 7-hour drive to the town of Saint Paul. It was the first of many new adventures to come as we set off to film a new series called "Offroad Escapes".
As we got closer to our destination, my excitement grew as it became very clear by the views as we drove that this trip was going to lead to some great trail riding. We pulled into the hotel parking lot at the Western Front in the late afternoon. From the outside, it just looked like an old brick building in a nice little town, but from all my research I knew better. Yes, it was an old building with some amazing history (ask the front desk for a history tour if you go), but the inside was very updated, clean, and comfortable. We spent the rest of the day exploring the area, grabbing some food, and of course, roasting marshmallows out by the fire.
Then before we knew it morning had arrived and it was time to hit the trails! Polaris Adventures houses side by sides right on the hotel grounds, and they were kind enough to lend us the Polaris RZR XP 4 1000 to ride for our trip. This worked out especially well as we had been trying to get our hands on one for a review!
As we pulled away from the hotel parking lot I was like a child on Christmas. Here I was, leaving a beautiful hotel, on a beautiful morning, in a brand new machine, and my favorite people in hand. There was no question that this was going to be a great day. It was only about a mile from the hotel to the Mountain View trailhead, which was an easy drive in the RZR being that Saint Paul is an ATV friendly town. As the hills and woods started to engulf us, I couldn't help but think about how perfect the weather was. Not only was it fully cooperating on our trip, but the morning had left this layer of fog that made the initial push into the Spearhead Trails even more picturesque.
When coming up with a plan for our ride, we had decided that our ultimate goal was to make it to the town on the other end of the trails. With never being on the Spearhead Trail System, and knowing there are around 120 miles of Mountain View trails separating the towns of Saint Paul and Coeburn, we weren't quite sure how long that would take.
After many miles and a few hours of riding, I was shocked when all of a sudden we just popped out of the woods and found ourselves at the trail entrance to the town of Coeburn. Apparently, our plan of getting a start on the day and sticking to the easier trails had paid off because we pulled into Coeburn at just the right time...lunchtime!
Being that Coeburn is also an ATV friendly town engulfed along the Spearhead Trail System, we decided to find somewhere to grab a little food and explore the town. As luck would have it we drove right past a place called Frostie Bossie. Bingo! A few minutes after our ice cream was gone (because you know...ice cream!) we loaded back up and headed towards the trailhead. At this point, I was feeling pretty satisfied with our progress in making it to Coeburn with still plenty of the day left. So now it was time to get in as many miles and loops as we could on our way back towards Saint Paul! We started out by immediately jumping on a blue trail.
Mountain View Blue trails are harder, more technical trails. Then from there are the black trails, which are considered the hardest. With so many different loops making up the Mountain View Trail, we were able to hit loop after loop without constantly ending up on the same trails. In fact, I believe the only time we ever hit the same area of trail twice was around the trailheads as we got on and off the trail system. On our way back, we treated the loops almost like a game. Just randomly picking a direction whenever we came to an intersection. This worked out great as it provided us ample of riding opportunities. It also allowed us to encounter some amazing views and wildlife. We even managed to come across a bear on the trail which was incredible!
Riding the Mountain View Trail along the Spearhead Trail System in Virginia made for an epic ride! If you are looking to hit one of the greatest trail systems in Virginia, consider riding this area.
As always thanks for watching, and I hope to see you on the trail!

We've added more miles to Mountain View. We now have access to an historic Coal Community called Dante VA. New amenities for riders and outdoor enthusiasts are in the works, but the ATV Trail is now open!! It's another beautiful mountain ride with extraordinary views!!

The amount of quality riding opportunities in the east is next level. WV, VA, and TN are just killing it.

I lived in Coeburn and ride this trail every weekend, there is a trail #80 that has boulders so big they were not able to get dozers around it to finish it. They are massive as in I'm 6 foot 3 inches tall and they make me look tiny.

That's awesome! Hard to beat that kind of riding environment in your backyard! We must have missed that trail (no surprise with how many miles of trails are out there!). We did not see any boulders as big as you describe, that sounds pretty intense. Such a good area to ride with so many different environments. The only thing it seemed to lack was mud. We found some water, but not a ton of mud. Did we just miss it?

@@NavigateOffroad there honestly is only a few mud spots but there is a pond that people try to play in.

I am thinking about planning a trip this summer to Spearhead. Do you think a 2wd Honda Rancher would be ok to go on the main trail from town to town?

Yes you have to have a permit to ride the towns and trails. You can get 1 day or weekly pass. You can call the trail org or the Western Front Hotel. www.westernfronthotel.com/
