Do facts matter anymore? Do voters care about falsehoods? What is the future of democracy in a world of "fake news"? When did any news we don't like become "fake news"? How can we ever know who to believe? What's happened to us, and what can we do to fix it?
Charles Sykes is an NBC / MSNBC contributor, and the Editor-in-chief of The Bulwark. For almost two and a half decades, until he stepped down in 2016, he was the host of a top-rated conservative radio talk show on WTMJ Radio out of Milwaukee.
Sykes has written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Politico, The Los Angeles times, Newsweek, Time.com, Salon, USA Today, National Review, The New York Review of Books, the New York Daily News, The Weekly Standard and other national publications. He has appeared on Meet the Press, This Week with George Stephanopoulos, State of the Union with Jake tapper, the Today Show, ABC, NBC, Fox News, CNN, PBS, and the BBC.
Sykes is currently a member of the Aspen Institute's Knight Commission on Trust, Media and Democracy. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

It's a shame this video doesn't have even 8,000 views. It's a message we all need to hear.

It does now! It's interesting to criticise social media because it includes legitimate experts and respectful fact-based media, not just individuals with their opinions. People must critically analyse where that fact or news comes from, but that takes more effort.

Charlie Sykes is an American treasure. To disagree with these pearls of wisdom is to disagree w/ common sense and the American way, because his words are in modern parlance the same words spoken 225 to 240 years ago by the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and of Madison, Monroe and the framers of the Constitution.

We need voices like this again. What happened to true Republican principles and universal integrity?

Sykes said in an interview that the Republican Party had become a party dedicated to being an opposition party and completely forgot how to govern. I'm paraphrasing, of course, but there is quite a bit of truth to that. I think that time period between 2006 and 2016 saw a lot of steps down to this corpse we see before us today.

I came of age in the world of the peer reviewed scholar. You can say it, but then have to defend it among equally knowledgeable experts. In human time, allowing for reasoning & thoughtful expression. It was not perfect as there were gatekeepers to that world. But this post-truth world of unrelenting, unchecked alternative facts & malevolent narratives, enabled by the unstoppable power of profit, terrifies me. We are giving our children a world I don’t want to live in.

Judge the character of a man by his actions; Mr Sykes not only offers true perspective but he gave up a lucrative Radio career because he couldn't sacrifice his principals and start to defend the lies of Trump. If he wished, he could have done what others did and kept his gig on TMJ but he didn't. That is putting your money where your mouth is, something that most would not have had the courage of conviction to do. I don't often agree with Sykes but I respect him more than most.

I believe the "liberals" I enjoy listening to would tell you that Mr. Sykes' voice and people of similar ilk are essential to a functioning republic. I didn't hear him say anything that would make me avoid a conversation with him. He only had ~ 16 minutes, so I would need to read his works and listen to him more to back up my assertion. [I consider myself a progressive/liberal/conservative. I am progressive and liberal more than conservative, but I there are times when each of those groups would accept me or reject me.]

It's easy, I know the difference between ten years ago and now. I once had a business, I once had a job, now I don't. A change has occured and for an artist it is felt, I don't need the news to tell me that democracy is fading...

Blah blah blah this is why Mark Belling always has held the number one spot in talk radio in Milwaukee. Belling is the real deal,Charlie just deals and sadly his table leans left.
